EPROM replcement?

Postby surfboardfiller » Sun 23.10.2005, 13:57

After my local dealer checked out my car; he said it needs a new EPROM as the co2 emissions are too high: 12.52% instead of 3%!
The suggested solution is a replacement/reprogrammed chip.

Is there a better alternative, to a stock Lotus program, which would provide better performance (legally)? Or is he dead right and I should just get on with it.

Thanks,

Phil

Surfer,
Have a look here:
http://www.astb91.dsl.pipex.com/MountainChipMenu.html
These chips are based on the latest EEPROM which allows lower adjustment of the CO using the CO potentiometer as well as giving a possible performance increase of around 20%. However your figure of 12.52% sounds way out, and I don't think a new chip alone could sort that out.

Also look in this Upgrades part of the Forum under headings such as:
ESM Chips - Performance & discussion
ESM Chips - Information & Help
    Dyno Results
That'll give you an idea of what's available and what it can do.

Phil,

It looks like I've got a duff PROM. Just for interest, did the dealer (presumably Williams) give any idea of price?

Sorry Geoff they didn't have a price.
They (Williams) said they used to swap them over for a few pounds but that was back in the 90's.
It's a firmware upgrade which should take very little time or resources.

I had them look at it again the original reading was false!

But only 9.52% out! Not good for a Lotus dealership.

The last I heard Lotus had no more stock - they were 99p or something like that so it would be worth checking with Lotus and ringing round Lotus dealers to see if anyone has any. I'll supply a copy of the standard 9930 (the Lotus modified emissions chip) for less than the enhanced chips (£50) but I can't match 99p!

These emissions do sound very high you should perhaps check the coolant temperature and mass air temperature sensors (CTS & MAT). Either remove and check resistances or use an ALDL reader to check they read the same when the engine is cold). Is is a hard start when warm? If so maybe an injector is leaking.

I have a few unprogrammed chips and a possible source for some more at a very competitive price (i.e. free) so I will try to grab a few more. If Alan can send me the requisite dumps, I'll programme than up and put them aside in case anyone ever needs them. On proof of LEC membership  you can have them free provided you make a contribution to ESM for ongoing Mountain development.

Good idea Geoff but people would have to get a G1 adapter or modify the MEMCAL.

A CO pot modified PROM dump is heading your way...

No! I was not impressed. They have the monopoly, so dealing with them can be an unfortunate struggle at times.

Turning up in the Elan usually scares the Sh1t out of most garages, which was fun for a while.
