Sourcing a Windshield in the US

Anyone know where to get a windshield in the US? I got a hold of Dave Bean and the cost is about $730 with freight. Is that the best it gets?

Also, exactly what trim pieces are needed for proper replacement? They suggested 2 side finishers @ $25/each and 1 top finisher at $12, bringing the total to about $800.

Another one might be Lo-Can Glass. I need to look for that one.

Also, rumor has it that the Noble uses the same windshiled as the M100.

ProSource did have them in stock on ebay recently for $495 + shipping...

With freight that is good. I did see a few on ebay from a US seller for around $500.00 but I am not sure if that was freight.

That seller was Pro-Source. After freight and crating, it's about $20 less than Dave Bean.

I just got a response from Paul Matty overseas and it looks like I could get one here for about $530 USD. The only problem is that Clive says none of their shippers will insure glass, so I'd be taking the (rather large) chance that it would be broken when it gets here.

Dear Hegg:

It is my understanding that you can insure glass shipments here in the states. So if you order from ProSource or Bean, it can be insured but the trick is to be there when it is delivered, open the crate in the presence of the shipper's driver and accept or reject it at that moment. In other words, open up the crate in front of their eyes and if it is cracked or broken, have them crate it up and take it back.

I have those same concerns because I need a windshield for my 71.

I looked at a Noble at Donington and it definitely has a very similar glass, but according to Joel, who sold his Elan to a friend when he got his Noble (still need to bum a ride in that ), he says that it not a true rumor -- not sure of the evidence to prove it but they do not match according to Joel.

I'm meeting up with Joel this Sunday in Danville for lunch... he's bringing the Noble to help me get off the fence and buy one. I'll try to take notice of the windshield but I don't think it's going to be at the top of my list.

I've stood and talked with Joel for a half hour or more about his marvelous Noble -- notice how I say that the one I looked at the windshield of was at Donington -- I never looked at Joel's windshield and you probably won't either -- hopefully you will get to look through it unlike me!

According to Joel the windshield in the M12 IS the same as the M100. The measurements apparently all matchup to the M100 he sold off.

P.S. You have to go for a spin in one of these machines. It left me giddy

I have a spare new windscreen still in the shipping box taking up a lot of room in the house. It came with the car from the original owner. The obvious problem is it needs shipping. You are welcome to it at half the current cost if you are still looking.

Thanks for thinking of me. I was able to get one from Frank at SportsCarWorld a month or two ago. It fit fine, but the VIN cutout was on the side of the windshield (rather than on my old windshield, where the VIN plate is at the bottom and there is no cutout). It's made me wonder if there are indeed other cars that share the same glass, or if some spec Elans have the VIN plate somewhere else.

My local glass shop (Elite Auto Glass) told me that you could get a windshield for the M100 Elan in Salt Lake City from Intermountain Jobbers. Their telephone number is (801) 355-7526 and ask for Ken Clark.

Also, they said that the windshield is a Pilkington Classics windshield and the part number is HT 1085.

Wow, that's great to know when I need another. The one I have is a Pilkington now, but I had to have it shipped from who-knows-where for who-knows-how-much. With all the (constant) road construction going on here in Salt Lake, I get rock chips all the time and I'm anticipating that I'm going to have to spend another $900 to get this windshield replaced. At least a local shop would be nice.
