Still confused.....
I thought it was the SE that has the Nardi wheel and the S2 the Momo.
The 'S2' wheel I have will fit the existing spline, but goes on too far and
on full lock, sounds the horn. Hence my original question: a collar of some sort seems to be required to stop the wheel going quite so far down. If it should be a straight swap, then it seems that part of the Momo boss is missing?

Can't remember who makes what so:
S2 slim desirable wheel (sold as an option which most people took up, I believe) replaces fat ugly SE standard wheel, without buggering around with additional bosses.

This is my view and I'm not saying I'm right or Sy is wrong, but I had an SE and bought a Nardi S2 steering and it was supplied with a boss that I fitted to the car.
When this car was written off last year I bought a cheap SE steering wheel and had Sinclaires fit it, so I could keep the Nardi. They remove wheel and boss and replaced it with just the SE steering wheel.
SE steering wheel is much deeper than an S2 without a boss.

OK, I accept that you've used a boss. But I swapped mine myself (from fat SE to guchi S2) and I didn't need or use one.

O.k it seems you can fit with or without a boss, as Sy and Paul have proved. 
The S2 nardi steering when order as a option was fitted with a boss as in the above photo (see pg 244 of the parts manual). The S2 I have now and the spare Nardi in the loft both have the lotus boss.

As for the SE / S2 thing depends on how you get your S2 'Nardi' wheel as these are supplied with a seperate boss, see section 32.05 of your parts guide. If second hand you would probably get it complete with boss etc.
However if you follow Nige's instructions for the SE wheel you will uncover a 'boss'. This has Nardi stamped on it which leads me to believe that both SE & S2 'Nardi' wheels are in fact both made by Nardi!
You can then use this boss, together with a suitable adapter & shroud, to bolt on whatever wheel you fancy

Unfortunately its not as good as it sounds - the PCD of the 6 boss holes are slightly different to the nardi wheel and are 30 degrees rotated from the SE wheel positioned. The simple solution does appear to be drill and tap new holes in the boss. How the horn will function is another matter and it needs a cover over the boss.
Not insurmountable but definitely more than a 10 minute job that it would be if there was a boss available.

Please, please do not drill the boss. All you need is a Nardi to Momo adapter (they pop up on e-bay now and again) - this will put the Momo bolts in the correct position - and any Momo rubber shroud to cover your boss.
Unless you go for another Nardi wheel that is

I have a Nardi wheel, the mounting holes start at 12 o/c and then spaced at intervals of 60 deg. The Standard steering wheel spider is stamped 'Nardi' but holes start at 15 deg from 12 o/c. Does the nardi / momo adaptor allow for this additional 15 deg rotation as well as a slight change in PCD.

I'm suprised to hear you have a Nardi wheel with the bolts starting at 12, they normally start at 1.

Agree, this is odd. The wheel came off a Subaru and has the standard cover with Nardi logo, it looks the same design as the S2 option.
I have found another option which may be of interest to others though. The Raid range of steering wheels have the same PCD and holes orientation as the standard Lotus wheel so will fit straight on, the only extra requirment would be for a cover over the calapsable spider.
