Soft Top (Hood) Release Handle

Hi All,
Currently driving an Elan SE hard top!

While attempting to lower soft top, the release handle pulled out from the bodywork. The handle is still attached to the cable but wont release the catch mechanism.

I can see there is a threaded section on the handle, but can't see
anything for it to screw in to. Should there be a captive or loose nut or a retaining plate?

Any tips or advice on how to gain access to the inner door pillar, then re-attach the cable release handle would be appreciated.

Hmmm.....that's interesting. I've just noticed that area on my car looks to have a small crack. I'd be interested to hear if anyone's got a fix for this before I pull the cable through as well.

Hi John and thanks for that. probnably not so much for me. I'm thinking I somehow need to reinforce that area before the cable pulls all the way through. Don't know if anyone's done that. Might take a look at screwing a small metal plate over the area....................

Early cars (some?) had the handle mechanism mounted in a plate, then they seemed to become integral to the body work.
Perhaps some form of plate mounted reinforcement to fit inside the recess is needed.

I had the same problem with the petrol flap release last week. To fix it, I had to open the hood lid (there is your first problem), pull back the carpet, remove the panel on the bottom, squeeze my hand in and reattach a nut that was dangling on the cable on the inside.
I could still open the petrol flap with the release cable unattached, so I would think that you could get the hood lid open, maybe if someone presses down on it for you to relieve some of the upward pressure exerted by the hood it will help.

Thanks for all the feedback, i'll hopefully be attempting a repair this weekend. Will post details of how i get on.

Elanlover: try fixing a large diameter washer (with a slot to go over the cable) behind the panel then bolt up as normal.

It should be easier for you to gain access while mechanism still working.

Don't wait until it breaks the fibreglass.
