Dear Monty:

I have considered having a custom one made here, but based on the results I have seen on my 1971 Elan (which is basically a straight pipe with two small bends in it), all I can generally conclude is that the exhaust guys here are Borstal Academy graduates.

For anyone else just considering this, just get on and do it.

The price is an absolute bargain (they'd charge £400+ in Glasgow for a customised one) and the deep throaty roar is spectacular. It makes it sound much more of a sports car and looks great into the bargain.

Just picked up the thread, took all day to read it.
I have a PM stainless system. The exhaust started leaking, and on investigation it is the pipe that leads down from the first down pipe triange at the start leading to a spring loaded joint? The system then narrows over the crossmember and joins the PM system.
In the thread somebody mentiones that PECO do the front section only (£75?). Will this replace the pipe that narrows over the crossmember? or is there more than one section required. Ultimately I want to replace the fractured pipe and get rid of the narrow section over the crossmember.
Any advice appreciated.

Finally had my Peco fitted last week on my S2 while my car was at Sinclairs for it's service and MOT.

Very please with the noise, the only problem sinclairs had fitting the exaust was one of the studs at the front snapped otherwise it was a very good fit and they remarked how well it was made.

one point they noted was when changing the exaust there is an O ring that needs to be changed where the exaust joins the manifold(precat?), the exaust comes with the gasket but not the O ring. I wonder if I had had it fitted at Kwik fit as intended would they have changed the O ring?????

So far I have not had any of the funny side effects such as the strange noise or boost creep, fingers crossed, could this be connected with the O ring????

The car was MOT'd just after the exaust was fitted and passed on emmissions no problem.

yep the Precats still in and seems to be well up to the job on it's own, when the car was mot'd last year the main cat was totaly finished and it passed no probs as well.

Peco exhaust fitting

my mate let me have a ramp down his garage today, we arrived at 2-30pm, i put kermit on the ramp which was a tight fit to get the legs under, with kermit up in the air i proceeded to take the old exhaust off with care just in case it is ever needed in the future. having taken off the rear silencer middle section & the squishy section, i looked at the 3 bolts which John suggested to heat up 1st, i took his advice & heated them up 1st, not the bolts but the actual casing where they screw into, then very carefully i cracked each 1 of them in turn, & to my amasement they all moved & unscrewed, yippeee i thought the complete exhaust was off.
I then ligned up the new peco exhaust from front to back, i would give this advice,
1. before attaching front pipe (without squish) put the middle section on.
this will make the connecting to front pipe much easier.
2.The silencer clamp, fit this to the mounting before attaching to slencer.
3. Fit it all together loosely before finally tightening everything up.
The whole process was finished at 4-30.
so 2hrs from start to finish, & stevie is a very happy bunny.

It sounds fantastic & has made the whole package with everest chip etc, more driveable, i have suffered no boost creep or other related problems.

Has anybody noticed whether they think the exaust seems very easy to catch on speed humps and on uneven roads???? I think it's the bend between the back wheels.

Has anybody expierenced this???

Mine catches on the speed bumps at work (the same vicious ones that stuffed the original exhaust) but never on public roads. The point of contact appears to be directly under the gear level when the front wheels are coming off the back of the hump. If I go over at 5mph, there is no problem but any higher and it scrapes. Mind you, the ones at work are particularly bad and do not comply with the guidance for speed bumps on public roads.

It would be worth seeing how low yours hangs and checking for missing mounting rubbers. Let us know how you get on.

Mine seems to be fine at that point, I think the lowest point on mine is between the rear wheels where the exausts bends????

very strange have to have another look and double check, when I looked over thwe weekend nothing looked particuly low from memory???

the front pipe is slightly lower than stock, mine is fine on the full length speed humps but on those single ones i just take to one side.

I have another theory that infact sometimes the exhaust is not catching but is infact bounching on the hangers and possibly hiting the underneath of the car at some part????just the way it sounded last night.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is what I'm experiencing from time to time as well.
