Rawlnuts

Am I correct in thinking that rawlnuts are a nut embbeded into a lump of rubber and stuck into a fixing point (e.g. a hole in the body) so that a fixing point can be achieved with a suitable bolt? If that is the case then presumeably they can be pulled out, replaced and glued back in? What adhesive? Are they easily available or is it best to order through the usual (PMs, SJs etc). How long are the bolts? Any info welcome.

Yes they are re-usable (if not rusted up). They don't need any adhesive. See here for how they work.

You can get them from SJ. They are also called Well Nuts. Try a search engine. They appear on ebay occasionally. These are a reasonable deal, but they are the smaller type, and too small for the wheelarches.

How long are the bolts?

They come in different lengths, diameters and materials (brass, stainless, rusty metal). You'll need different diameters for different jobs on the Elan.

Dave, I am interested. Can you let me know how much for which ones please? I am currently looking at the rear liners but intend to have a go at the fronts at some point. I am also considering replacing the ones along the bottom edge of the rear bumper (M5 X20 and X25).

yes, M5 for the enigne bay, and M6 for the door innards and under the rear bumper

I got them in the Us from Napa.com -- Ekapol has the bags with the important Napa number on them -- I think I had to type in the number more recently to get them to appear as the search did not bring them up -- they were delivered next day actually and the price was right -- but that is for the USA clan as an FYI . . . .

This is indeed good news, if you can supply please put me down for 2 complete wheel arch sets - i.e. for 4 wheel arches.

I ground the heads off the bolts to get mine off. I don't suppose you can get the j-nuts 2 each side at the end of the bumper? I had to grind them off as well.

I'm pretty sure I can get 'J' nuts but not in Stainless. Shouldn't be a problem if you use copaslip on assembly
Please note that 2 of my 'J' nuts chewed the glassfibre slots to bits when I took them off. Had to fabricate a plate to fix them.
Will get costs for full arch sets and post details this weekend. Will you also need the self tappers?

Sounds like you had more problems than I did with the bumber screws - I didn't damage the fibreglass (luckily)

To answer your question; Yes, I would like the stainless self tappers as well and I take your point about the copaslip - I have a 1/2 kg. tub next to my tool box at all times!

Hand to grind the bolts off my wheel arch liners (what a crap design) and i just used large washers and popped rivited them back on like a butchers dog

Having trouble with identifying the rear fixings. The parts list and my car seem to differ
My car has two flat heads on the left hand arch and three on the right hand arch. The Right-hand ones double up as fixings for the washer reservoir and are therefore longer. Parts list shows 6 for both arches with the reservoir ones listed separately?
Anyway I will get prices for what I have fitted as mine looks to be stock. Let me know if yours differ.

I have a spire nut and a rawl nut on drivers side rear (plus 2 bumper fixing screws) and 2 fixings on passenger side rear (plus 2 bumper fixing screws) Parts listing makes no sense to me.

3. 1 x Rear Valance - £3.70
4. 1 x Radiator duct undertray - £2.20

The rear arch sets will be with extended bolts, washers and nylocks to hold the washer resevoir on RHS.
paza1 are you sure it is a spire nut? Some call them by different names but for me spire nuts are used for self tappers. Maybe you are just missing a rawlnut?

Definitely a self tapper and the parts list does indicate a spire nut (Parts List Ch. 12 item 27, although not definitive IMHO.). Nevertheless, I would like the full kit please. How would you like to be paid (Paypal, cheque....)?

OK, here's what I think you should have (& what you will get!) on the rear liners.
Upper 2 fixings to body shell - M6 rawlnuts + M6 screws
Lower 2 fixings to bumper - No 8 self tappers + spire nuts (not stainless!).

The upper 2 on RHS have longer bolts, with nyloc's to secure the reservoir -
There is an additional M6 screw / rawlnut for the reservoir at the 12 0'clock position in the RH arch - see parts list sect. 17 items 35 & 36.
These longer screws may take a few extra days to get hold of - remember we are talking small volume here - so I hope you can wait a while longer Just let me know if you are desperate for a part order & I'll see what I can do.

Paypal (never done it before so hope it works OK) will be fine. Will PM details when I have the bits.
