Hiya Nobby,

Looking really good 8) - just a teeny thing......reckon it would look even better with a clear side rather than the slightly blue one. Sorry to be picky, but this detailing lark can become a bit obsessive .

Just spoke to the local dealer and they're expecting the Fed side marker next week - get weekly deliveries on Thursday. Fingers crossed

The resins I have got for the backing cases is actually white. I also have some black pigment to make it shades of grey. Does anybody think that this could be an issue?

Back laterz

Wolfie, just to let you know I received and installed the lear front lenses and they look great. They do update the look of the car somewhat.

All we need are clear side markers for the fed Elan now............ :poke: :-D

Not sure exactly what you mean by retroreflective, but link below shows close up of my 944 top clear fog, which is cast from reverse lenses.

Hi, Richard,

The Federal sidemarkers act as reflectors if a light is aimed at them and the bulb is not illuminated.

Hiya Don,

Doh!.......I'm getting a bit confused :? So if they are only reflectors and not illuminated with a bulb, would they be legal if they were clear?

Also LGM said....

Wolfie,
The side markers on the fed elans are the same as on the Ferrari 348, 355, Testarossa, BB512I and some of the later model Lamborghini Diablo's. All of them use the indicators on the bumpers rather than the 1/4 panel.

Marie

Also this link....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... otohosting

shows the the Ferarri 348 unit to have a bulb and wiring :!:

Now I'm very confused, maybe easier to see when I hoepfully get hold a unit later this week. If anybody can clarify, that would be great.

Richard, I think what's trying to be said here is that there is definitely a bulb in there. But, when the light's not on it also serves as a reflector. So, if your Elan is parked in your driveway at night with the lights off and car drives up your street, the markers will reflect the light back. They serve 2 purposes - illuminate and reflect when not illuminated.

Make sense?

Sorry for being a bit dense  .....yep I get the idea now.

I guess the answer is I've no idea until I get the unit and take it apart.

I hope that the pattern on the rear of the lenses together with chrome spraying the inside of the casing shouild give an acceptable effect.

Thanks again,

Richard

Just a very quick update to let you now I haven't forgotten the sidemarkers - I'm STILL waiting for the part. Phoned dealer Monday and will try them again tommorrow to see if by any chance it was on this week's delivery ! This looks like it could be a slooow process.

In the meantime, I may just try this out on a Supra side indicator which surprisingly aren't available in clear apparently :o

Oh yes....a very nice chap came round to buy a pair of fronts today, and as a relatively new owner, I told him to get on here ASAP. So if a guy called John from Bucks with a red M100 comes along - I sent him :D

Hi Richard, any updates for us? Not trying to nag, just curious if you're having any luck getting the parts and duplicating them in clear. Also, just an odd quesiotn for you.

The current lens and housing take a 501 bulb. Near as I can figure, that is equivalent to a 194 type bulb (I think the euro type is 501 and the NA equivalent is a 194 perhaps?). Anyway, there's also a wedge bulb type known as a 7440 and 7443 (dual filament). They would probably be larger than the 501 (or 194) bulb. The one I am looking at is actually 2 1/2 inches high - its an LED version. Any chance you could build the lens with the ability to handle this bulb too? Don't know if its easy to make it with a different receptacle or make it so it will take a longer bulb. Obviously, this would only make sense if it didn't require screwing with the original dimensions in a way as to make your clear version not fit properly in the car. Thanks!

Hi All,

Sorry I haven't come back an update before, but there was nothing new to report. It's now 3 months since I ordered that side marker from my local dealer and still nothing. I was phoning every week but gave up about a month ago - kept saying it was on order and would come ....eventually.

My original moulds became exhausted with use (a bit like me) LOL so this week I made some more and the quality is superb. Just took this pic of a pair I'm about to pack for shipping.

Image

For those who have yet to fit them, I'm offering them at £60 inc amber bulbs and 1st class recorded post for payment by cheque. Overseas customers paying by PayPal please add £3 to cover receiving costs. Stock available NOW :D

In the last few weeks I have developed a number of new and exclusive items including fronts, rears and prototype sides for the Mk3 Supra. I mention this because the sides are sealed units which I hace had to cut apart and the cast the 2 halves as separate moulds and use a different material for the casing, so principle would be the same. Have to say it was a PITA and needs further work. Pic below gives you an idea

Although these are the hardest and take longer to make than any other of my products, there is at least a huge market for these as everybody with a Supra seems to want them :-D

For those of you who still have the half and half front indicators, I have a special offer which might be of interest.

For all orders placed and paid for before Dec 25th, I'm reducing the price to £52.50/pair including amber bulbs, PayPal costs and 1st class recorded post (U.K).

I already have a few sets done awaiting despatch, so treat yourself for Xmas(or drop a subtle hint to someone -;)

At this price they must rank as one of the best value styling mods for the Elan 8)

Richard,

I'm probably being a bit dense (happens most of the time), but you sent me (with the fronts and rears) three sets of bulbs 2 x Amber and 1 x Chromium.

What are the Chromium ones for? At first I thought they might be fancy replacements for the sidelights, but from memory I think that have a spade type connector.

Thanks

Hi there Ailwyn,

The chrome ones actually light up orange and can be used for front or rear indicators. They are only cheapies, but I thought you might like to see how they looked, particularly in the rears to overcome any hint of 'fried egg effect'.

You may find them a bit weak, but I passed 2 MOT'S with them. If you prefer the look of the silver bulb, you might like to consider Philips SilverVision which I use in my 944 and are noticeably brighter but cost another £12-15.

Have you fitted the rears yet? Would be pleased to see pics when done.

Best Regards,

Richard

Richard,

Ah, it becomes clear now (pardon the pun). Thought that might be the case, just thought I'd check.

Not fitted any of them yet, have a few jobs lined up for the car during my well earned xmas holiday.

Will post pics when complete.

Thanks

Just had an enquiry from a guy in Canada asking if my clear rear lenses would fit a U.S spec Elan ?

Was pretty sure they're do but thought I'd better check with those who know for sure

Well the guy in Canada wasn't me (that I know of). And I'm not expecting any lenses under the tree this year. The Fed Elan and the Canadian Elan are identical with the exception of the metric instruments and daytime running lights. Your clear lenses for Fed cars will work on one in Canada.

That is unless the person imported a UK spec one into Canada???

Just curious, where's this person from in Canada? There aren't that many Elans left in the country now. Probably no more than 5 including mine. I think there's 2 in Montreal, one on the west coast, mine in Toronto and who knows how many elsewhere.

p.s. Any update on clear side indicators for Fed cars or are you still waiting for parts??????

Hi there Elanlover,

This guy's name is Claude and he's one of the ones in Montreal :D He saw my bargain offer for the fronts on eBay. I'll steer him in this direction

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=009

Thanks for the confirmation about the rears and sorry but with my experience of trying the Supra side indicators of similar construction, I would have to say it's a non starter. It's not only defining the cut line in the first place, it's finding a successful way of bonding the 2 parts together again. Cyanoacrylate(SuperGlue) carefully applied in a minute bead works okay, but its incredibly difficult not to get a visible glue line :(

And that's just one of the problems..........
