Hi all, My cam angle sensor unit has a horrible rumble about it.
Im assuming it consists of the cast body, with shaft running through it, and a bearing (or two?) pressed into the cast body. Anyone had grief with this before? Is there a means of replacing the bearings and more importantly a source. Cheers

It's possible to replace the whole unit (Isuzu) for about $70 here in the US?

jimbob,
There was one person on LEC who had a CAS bearing problem and posted the replacement details. It was a machining job as the replacement was a slightly different size.
He didn't quote noise as the problem - it was an oil leak. Everybody kept telling him that the leak was from the O-ring, but he was correct that the bearing seat was indeed the source of the leak.
Can't remember who it was but it's academic anyway as the write-up was in one of the many threads which have since disappeared into the ether.
Just as well the Domesday Book, Magna Carta and Declaration of Arbroath were all drawn up before computers were invented.

So the problem is in the cylinder head then?

Brian,
Not sure I expressed myself well: the problem was with the bearing within the CAS. The bloke found a suitable replacement but had to have the CAS housing machined to accept it.
A replacement CAS as you suggested would have been another cure, but they're not as easy to get here as where you now reside.

Cheers for that John-w, I have sent a pm to F1 Lotus to make enquieries with reguards to obtaining a new unit from the states (anyone else know how I go about this?). At the moment if there is the slightest chance I can get a new C.A.S. unit even minus the hall effect sensor, I will try that option first, then Im left with the original to sort / Bu**er up at my leisure.

You could try posting a notice in the Wanted Elan Parts section in case someone in the UK has a spare one, otherwise it shouldn't be too difficult to ship one from the 'States?

Jimbob,
U sure it`s the bearing gone as u do get a slight noise/vibration cause CAS is spining and may rub on the plastic cover. The best thing is to remove the plastic cover and run the engne to see if the noise is still there.

Hi Monty, Had cap off the other day while engine running, did the old long screwdriver to the ear test and there is a distinct grinding coming from the c.a.s. aluminium housing

I have one. It has a dead hall-effect sensor but other than that it's fine, and I could post it tomorrow if required.
Let me know if interested.
