Windscreen wiper fallen off rotor arm

Guys,

I wonder if any of you would be able to offer some advice on my driver’s side windscreen wiper. I was out the other day when it started to rain. I put on the wipers and found that only the passenger side was working.

When I got out to investigate I found that the drivers side wiper arm was limp and could be moved without any resistance. After opening the bonnet I found that the arm had come off what appears to be a rotor arm (for want of a better expression). It appears to be a ball and socket type joint. The space where the wiper motor is housed, as you'll be aware is tight, I tried to push the socket onto the ball (f the rotor arm) but I couldn't apply enough pressure to do it successfully. Can anyone offer me some advice on how to reattach the wiper arm?

I think I can quite honestly say that I have never heard of this happening and I fear (knowing how tight the space around the mechanism is) it may be a removal/fix/refit job. But, let's hope I'm wrong and that someone has managed it before...

I'm not sure if this will work having never tried it myself but................

If you remove the plastic cap at the base of the arm (we're talking outside the engine bay) you'll see that its held on with a nut. Remove the nut and wiper arm. You "may" be able to push the spindle the nut screwed onto down into the engine bay thus allowing you to apply pressure from the top and bottom of the joint in question......if you know what I mean.

Worth a try anyway. Be very, very careful you don't slip off the spindle and crack the glass. Probably should put a towel or something there for protection.

it's an easy 2 day job if you're experienced - - remove the engine and then get in the engine bay and lay with your face upwards. Put your left hand up on the side to stabilize yourself and then with your right hand you have to grab the motor and make a honking sound. The sound will signify that you are screwed . . . did you really read all this? If so then I regret to say I agree with Sy and hope someone has some real help info . . .

It appears that Sy has successfully taken over your role and disposition, being pleasant and helpful to newbies whereas you seem to have inherited the bearded beast of Birmingham's attributes. Who can forget your last two line put down and Sy's diplomatic recovery?

There is an alternative ! you can buy the hole wiper mechanism including the motor and connecting rods in the lotus surplus parts sale for around £100 if you cant fix your problem.
