I am considering to repaint my Lotus Elan
But i am considering not to take an official colour I am thinking of doing it in either oilblack or smoked grey. What do u think about not using original colours ?

I think if you purchased the Elan to drive and have fun with, I would paint it whatever color you want. If you drive it minimally and take it to car shows and think there is the possibility you may sell it in the near future, the original color would probably be best.
With that said, if you change the color, are you aware of what a pain in the tail it would be? My friend got a $12,000-$14,000 quote to change the color of his Esprit. :shock:

This price included taking the car apart to do in the jams and all other nooks and crannies.

If you want it a certain color...do it! That's what I think. Most importantly....have fun with it.

I just bought it this week, but the varnish is gone at some places especially at nose, and there are some scratches on the side and rear aswell, I have a friend who is willing to do it for me for only 1000 euro (have to buy the paint myself) so the price isnt a big problem.
I am not planning to sell that car again i will keep it as a classic so classic should be original colour no?

A re-spray sounds all right though my advice would be to think about the colour for a while after you have chosen it. To get bored with it would be a tragedy and if you do sell the car, even though you are not planning to, it would be best to have a thorough job done. I have seen cars where you open the door and it’s a different colour in odd places. Looked really bad and slightly dodgy.

Have you seen the Elan in steel blue?

I was going to suggest that one which is Midnight Blue and if i ever come to respray pinky thats what i`d have done. Got to be the best colour for the M100 (besides red :-D

)

The thing is, for a good job u need to remove the clam and other panels and maybe even remove the engine so u can spray the bulkhead :shock:

Yeh it's a pretty serious job. Could look like you are trying to hide something if you still have old colour showing. But if it's your pride and joy, and lets face it these cars are stupidly cheap to buy, so a few grand to bring it back to its best is a cost I'm willing to pay. Though I'm keeping mine BRG so it's quite a lot cheaper than that for me.
I think you could probably get a better price. Hope you can
