glovebox retention

ok, after having my car for over a year now i have managed to get myself a GB that fits with a working latch (although no key to fit it ) that will be replacing the one i have fitted that is screwed, thats right, SCREWED into the interior trim surround.

Now, i have had the old box in and out when adjusting my heater controls, so i know how that works, cotter pin and split pin thingy etc etc, however, when i undid the old latch mechanism, using a philips head drive and a counterclockwise turn, the GB just fell forwards, and anything in it would have fell all over me, well, my face to be exact due to me being in the "fixing a lotus by being inverted" posture required for most jobs

So what i'd like to know is what SHOULD be there to stop a working GB from falling forwards and emptying onto passengers feet when the latch is operated.

If anyone has answers with , say, digi cam pics, that would be mega helpfull, as looking in the manuals hasnt been very usefull so far

Mick it's a little metal tab attached to the centre of the top edge of the box, which fouls on the facia surround IIRC.

cheers for the reply Sy, i'll look into it this weekend when i'm at the bro in laws where its parked on his driveway, me not having a garage at the mo and its SORN'd for some overdue maint and restoration.

i will have and old Gb mate, but its not in good nick, it doesnt have a latch, the previous owner held it in place with glue, velcro and a screw!!!

TBH, i dont know if its one for a LHD that got "adjusted" to not-quite-fit my RHD car.

but, i dont need it now, so if you want it we'll call it postage costs and maybe a beer if i ever get to any of the big meets

The surface of my glove box has blistered. I'm after one that is in top condition but not bothered about a latch as I can transfer mine.

Take care when getting a new glovebox as I am sure there are 2 different types with different hinge/pivot thingies....thats got it..Manual 14.12A although couldn't find the change in the Service Bulletins

new GB has def got that stopper plate fitted (old one didnt) and now i know how it works, so tyvm

my old box facia isnt bubbled or marked from what i have seen of it so far, but i think it is glued onto the box itself, not sure if i could get it off without damaging it.

When i get round to doing it(sorry but its quite far down on the list of sorting outness) and if i can seperate it without any damage then i'll post it onto you, its gonna cost next to nothing as its light and will fit into a jiffy bag.

I'll PM you when i know more and we'll sort out the address to send it to
