Welp, got the transmission out today! Now just waiting for the clutch parts and flywheel to arrive, then I can guess how to put it all back together.

Suprisingly easier than I thought, with the exception of the shift linkage cable mounting bracket and the speedo gear.

Now I need to figure out how to get the pressure plate and flywheel off without having a way to stop the engine from turning... any suggestions?

Can it be done by someone holding a socket or spanner on the timing pulley bolt?
You would need a person to help you out though, unless you've got extremely long arms.

Thats my best amateur suggestion! I'm sure the gods from on high will tell you if that is a possible way of doing it or not.

I used a extra jack stand to catch the edge of the flywheel (the raised part that attaches to the pressure plate) and keep it from turning. When reinstalling, put it on the other side to keep it from turning clockwise. The pressure plate bolts do not require much torque so those weren't an issue as much as the flywheel bolts.

I know it's a round-about way of doing it, but when it comes to changing the timing belt are there not two bolts (or at least bolt holes) which stop the cams from turning? Would this stop the flywheel too?

No, no! Not the original! I didn't know if the Isuzu one would fit the motor, so I've been ordering ones from Dave Bean until I get a chance to see if a nice Mobil-1 would fit. I'm headed to Checker / AutoZone now to find out!

I was sorta planning on doing a write-up on changing the clutch after I'm done in case some other poor soul wants to do it him/herself. (it's actually not too bad - relatively)

I had done a write up previously when I changed my clutch years ago, but it must have been bounced after no one posted to it for a while. Thought it might save you some time! You're right, it really wasn't too bad. Just took a bit of time to get everything in/out.

The main trick on reinstall is getting the input shaft to line-up just right. It helps to have an extra set of hands for that step to position the transmission at the correct angle. Also, when putting things in, make sure you don't move the clutch actuator arm. Had to take mine out a 2nd time (after just putting it in) because the bearing clip came out of its seat.

I'm using Mobil 1 oil filters on my car with no problems. Much less expensive that the original Lotus filters. I can send you the oil filter number if you would like.

I picked up a Mobil1 M1-104 filter today that looks to be the right one. Is that the one you use, Algirdas?

Thanks for the re-assembly pointers also! I've just got my fingers crossed that the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate/release bearing are all correct. Only time will tell...

For anyone still interested, the clutch, pressure plate, and release bearing have all showed up and look to be a perfect fit. The flywheel, unfortunately, is 5 weeks backordered. I did call the manufacturer and get all the blueprint dimensions for it and measured them against mine, so hopefully no suprises when it shows up!

So far the Esprit is holding up ok with just one headlight issue I had to resolve. I love driving it every day, but I sure hate driving it every day. Nearly 23,000 on the clock now, and rising rapidly.

Once I verify that these parts fit, I'll post them in the cross reference section. Lots of good information in there, although I couldn't find a McLaren F1 at the local junkyard that I could scavenge a front blinker from...

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner concerning the oil filter. You have the one that I am using (Mobil M1-104). I have had not problems with it and it appears to be a good quality piece for a very reasonable price.
