Radiator leak

Postby Specky » Thu 02.11.2006, 19:39

Got back with no dramas... :D

Cheers all...

Thanks for the loan of the torch, Thanks for all the numerous offers of bottles for water and thanks for finding evidence of a leak..

Temperature stayed just below 1/4 for the whole journey...

I'll check the water level tomorrow... first bloomin frost of the year...

So Mr Muley old chap... help!!!

Took the old girl for a check up from the neck up and... she wet herself..

A couple of three questions though....

1) Where to get a RAD and prices?

2) Does anything else use the same RAD?

3) Were to get, two new Renault Traffic fan/ surrounds, Pt No's, Prices?

4) Any tips/how to change the old fella..

Cheers in anticipation..

Bother!

Where on the Rad is the leak from? I saw you had the headlamp pod up last night presumably you were checking the bleed valve that sits under there which is easyish to get out and a bugger to put back in.

As you've identified Jim is our resident Radxpert. But as far as I know the answers to your questions are:

1) For a standard item the usual suspects, SJs or Paul Matty £175 exchange only Jim had his recored for a lot less. Jim also had his nive new ally one made.

2) Although there has been speculation that the Rad was lifted from a Peugeot I think the general consensus is that its unique to the Elan.

3) Unclear why you need new fans? You might want to consider Pacet or Kenlowe from Demon Tweeks or the like. Plastic fans and plastic surrounds, light and well proven in motor sport. They fasten to the rad with Ty wraps.

4) Not beyond what's in the manuals as I haven't done this, yet.

No visible crack or hole, but the coolant leaks out bottom left corner oaf the Rad... Just where the little pipe is...

Unclear why you need new fans?

the shrouds are badly corroded.

Had mine re cored for £100 + vat by 'Advanced radiators Ltd'. I think they might be a national chain. Core came from some place in Glasgow who apparently had just made a new batch. Bit of a rip off if you ask me as the core is tiny!

Beware that the new retaining tubes located on the rad. top / bottom were not the same as OE so I had to make new rubbers for the bottom and curse 'cos the tops were not swaged to keep the bugga up while you fit the support frame

Worth checking if the core is OK - mine was leaking from a fatigue failure of the crimp attaching the plastic end cap to the core (seems to be a common failure mode for crimped end caps due to continuous hot / cold heat cycling) but the core itself was sound. I have since been quoted £45 - £60 for fabricating and welding Ali end caps to my old core

My research at the time suggested that the end caps are Peugeot so the height of the rad is off one of theirs but the Elan core is a lot longer making it unique.

I'm sure there is a post on here suggesting the fans are from a Renault?? van. Can't find it right now tho' :?

Cheers Geoff...

Already posted a similar question on that thread....

No joy

Dave,

OK, whatever the problem is; it's going to have to come out. Unless it's a loose drain plug - you might get lucky

(It's a lot easier with the bumper off but that would create it's own mini-saga - trust me!)

To remove rad;

1) Take off the plastic undertray - held with 4 6mm. bolts that have small heads - mine were rusted to buggery so I ground them off.

2) Undo hose clips and pull hoses out of the way

3) Undo the bolts on the rad mount - see pic - there's a lot of them and some are difficult to get at and are small, too. I have a small cheap socket set that allowed access to the more difficult buggers. This is a good time to practise all your swear words and wonder why Lotus engineered this in such a perverse way. Leave a couple of the bigger ones in place until last as the rad will now want to drop on your head

4) Remove rad, wring coolant out of your clothes!

5) Choices;

a) if its the core you can get them recored - try any local Serck dealer - if you get stuck try Heathrow rads (I work near there so I can drop it off / collect it for you)

b) if its the drain plug - stripped thread - degrease with meths and Araldite in place with classic Araldite - mine has been in Le Mans traffic james in searing heat witohut a problem

c) if its the side tanks, then put out a wanted add (I may have a fairly decent rad if you get stuck) or you can get an entire one in aluminium made by those jolly nice chaps at Alisport (£350+vat) - they'll need your old one as a template. [T'other Dave has suggested getting side tanks fabricated in ally - seems a reasonable price yet another option]

6) Optional - replace the fans - these are Renault van fans - not that expensive - complete with cowls. There's a thread about that (I have not replaced mine - yet)

7) In true Haynes manual style - Refitting is the reversal of removal :-D I chopped up a scouring pad to replace the knackered sponge bits on the rad mounting pins. Top tip - hoick the rad up into position and secure with tie wraps round the lower pins and the inverted y-yoke so you can fiddle with the rad mounts and the many bolts. You can leave these in place afterwards.

While you're at it - I'd recommend replacing the hoses - they're quite accessible with the rad out.

HTH

Jim

Hopefully that's it as it is exactly the area you're talking about. I'd try a new plastic plug first. Might save you a lot of headache. Look at the radiator core in that area and make sure there's no residue on the fins first. THAT would be a sign of a leak vs. just the drain plug being loose or cracked.
Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Examined the radiator from top to bottom...Unfortunately the rad looks perfect... no obvious leaks.. it's nigh on impossible to see where the coolant is coming from... but it emanates from the bottom left corner, bad crimp I guess... just behind the little metal pipe..

I'll post a pick in a few days...

Tried to find a couple of new Trafic/R25 fans 'n' shrouds today... no joy... any ideas....

Looks like the crimp has fatigued - mine looked similar but at the other end.
Careful with the fan shroud bolts - they are shoulder bolts - one of mine sheared off so had to tap it out.

Take off the plastic undertray - held with 4 6mm. bolts that have small heads - mine were rusted to buggery so I ground them off.
Then you will need some of these

Why not try the Internet - I searched for "Renault Trafic spares" and came up with several like this this - note the second line in the feedback is "Mr theakston, PAIGNTON, Devon - requested Renault TRAFIC Van Parts and purchased: radiator cooling fan
part was fine, thanks"
