Cas Oil Seal

Postby dans » Sat 18.11.2006, 20:16

Hi All,

Just in the process of replacing the CAS seals.

I have the CAS out but it is not obvious to me where the seal is supposed to go?!?!? Does it sit right at the CAS end of the shaft? And would therefore sit in the groove between the CAS and the Cover it is flush up against? Cos if that is the case, I haven't got a seal there at the moment!!!!
Or does it sit about 5mm in from the CAS end of the shaft?

Haven't got any pics at the mo but might bring the camera back later to get some if I can.

Any help appreciated once again! :D

Cheers,
Dan

Have you read this? http://www.lotuselancentral.com/repair/casseal.htm
Seems to me to suggest there is only one seal and it is the one on the shaft in the groove. Maybe the new seal looks and feels different because the old one has been compressed and heated for years.
I haven't done the job myself so this is just IMHO.
Good Luck

yep, that is source of inspiration!!

but:
You will see the offending O-ring on the shaft attached to the CAS

didn't give as much detail as I wanted!!
I'd have thought the groove at the mating faces would where the seal would be but what do I know?!?!?!

Again ease this with a little oil on the O-ring as it will be a snug fit.

My money is on the seal fitting into the groove on the shaft part of the CAS but I do see your logic.
Lots of Finbar Saunders comments must be due soon
Hope someone can confirm for you

Having had read around I decided my logic was logical but wrong!!

Having had a look at the bung it was obvious that the o ring is sat in the groove, so i've now replaced them..... hopefully successfully!!!
time will tell I'm sure!

Dan,

So, where exactly do you install that O-ring seal?
Please show a picture.

Hi,

If you look at dsc0139 picture above the black band round the shaft is the o ring that i've replaced, using the instructions that paza mentioned above.

Dans,
From your picture, you've correctly identified the "black band" as the o-ring.

The ring develops a flat outer circumference when worn, which you can see on the picture of my old one below. However yours seems to have taken the concept of wearing flat to a new level, and looks more like a rubber band. I think you'lll notice a difference in future. No oil leak, a cleaner engine, and no smell of hot oil around the engine and cockpit.

Thanks John,

It certainly didn't look like it would do much sealing in that state!!!

I was listening to the CAS whilst the engine was running (see other thread about engine whine) and it certainly sounds a bit "rattley". It felt notchy when turning it by hand off the car, is this normal? Could it be the bearings in the CAS shaft are a bit tired, and this has caused the excessive flattening of the seal??? possibly random ramblings but ....?!?!

Cheers,
Dan

I wouldn't be surprised if your c.a.s. bearings are gone - mine have at 46000 miles ! Time for a trip to the states!! Group buy?

c.a.s. bearings
===========

Can we just buy the c.a.s. bearings alone?

Thanks.

FWIW my old seal was completely flattened on it's outside edge (so it looked like a rubber band) and the new one looked utterly different.

You've replaced the right thing.

Because the leak was making such a mess in the engine bay I was able to do a lot of tooth sucking when I bought the car and knocked a bit off the price! Daft really.

Dan,

I don't think the seal would be affected much by the bearing because it sits still in it's groove.

On the subject of CAS bearings there was a thread somewhere documenting how one Elaner had discovered a 'stock' bearing that was slightly larger so he had the cas machined to accept it. Does anyone esle remember this? The reason I ask (another thread hijack) is that my CAS rumbles a bit, too.

Cheers

Jim,
That threadwas one of the ones which have disappeared. I looked for it a while ago.
