Interested in buying a M100 (eventually!)

Postby cider_fox » Thu 10.08.2023, 21:58

Hi all,

I've just joined the forum to learn a bit more about ownership of a M100. It will definitely be a while before I'm able to get one but I live in hope :D

One thing I'm not sure on is what the ground clearance and approach angle is like? I've got a bump where a drainage channel is on the road to my house, and the driveway is a bit of a slope too. Does anyone have any experience of a steep driveway? How does the Elan handle speed bumps etc?

Thanks!

Hi Dan, and welcome to LEC.

To try to help you with your (current!) questions - and I'm sure you have plenty more, so don't be afraid to ask......

Speed bumps are no problem (either the whole road width, or the individual 'traffic calming' ones) - that said, hitting them at great speed isn't a good idea. The single ones have 2 different approaches, either hit it centrally with one side of the car, or aim to hit it equally with the 'lump' central to the wheels. Both work, the second approach is my preferred method, but I have the confidence that my suspension is at the correct height and isn't a 'slightly-sagging' 30+ year old system..... and I know it misses the sump/chassis/exhaust (but I still have an aluminium sump plate fitted just in case!

Angles of approach is a very subjective thing - whenever I book on a ferry I inform them of a 'low ground clearance' and they put me on the flat deck with the lorries...... but not all of them have the facility for that, and when we went to the IOM the ferry had a few ramps which I was concerned about, but caused no problems.

At my old house, I lived on a hill (reasonably steep) and my driveway was at quite an angle from the road - it never caused me a problem, but your mileage may vary!

Here are a couple of photos from when I lived there, and they don't show it as severe as it actually was, but may give you some idea (apologies that they don't really show the angles, but they are just some pictures I have from a few years ago).

If you put your location on your profile, there may be someone locally who is happy to drive round your way to see how it fits - with a name like cider-fox I'm hoping that it may be Somerset, and there are plenty of active members down there.... but that is pure guesswork on my part!

Hello and welcome!
The approach angle is not really an issue for me, it's lower than a normal car but still reasonable as the front of the car is not that long.
I can go on a 4 posts lift (with long ramps) without any issue for instance (the rubber lip is just brushing against the ramps, but that's it). The Esprit is much worse in that regard (I have to add a few bits of wood).
Ground clearance is OK too.

As for the speed bumps, if you go slow on them it's all right-ish, otherwise the front will probably touch the ground, especially when going down the speed bump.
I suspect my dampers bump stops are shot though, and obviously this could be the source of the problem.

Thank you both so much for your answers! That's very much in line with what I thought - it doesn't seem to sit as low as other Lotuses, and the shorter front overhang helps. I was at the Festival of the Unexceptional a couple of weeks ago and there was a beautiful Esprit that really inspired (i.e. scared) me into doing more research

A couple of really nice cars there dapinky, thanks for sharing! FYI, despite being cider_fox I'm currently in Yorkshire and spent most of my life around Manchester so I'm definitely one of them Northern folk. I just appreciate a really good cider!

Yorkshire is a big old place, but there is quite an active Lotus contingent up there (I even went for a Sunday Lunch with them one day when I was living in Somerset and had nowt else to do on the day!).

The pictures are quite old now - the red one is long gone, the blue one has been Empire Green for 8 years, and I am just finishing off a restoration of another blue one (which will be yellow) for the missus.

Yorkshire is a big old place! I'm over towards the Manchester side near Huddersfield.

I'm interested in why you're changing the colours of the cars! Are they being changed to traditional colours that you've always liked? I'd never thought of changing the colour, is it easy enough to find the right colour and get it applied?

Ah, your one of them there Lancs blokes who claims to be a Tyke! (or something like that, anyway)....

..... you need to make contact with Nick- he lives in Sowerby Bridge and tends to use his car most of the year (except this week he's in the Lakes, so I assume he's taken the BMW). I'm sure he'd be happy to come and talk Elans and see how it fits on and off your property..... then he'll tell you all about how great they are (when they're running well)......

As for changing colours, well, my car was Pacific Blue, and like many of them, the clear-coat lacquer started to peel and it looked pretty crap after a few years of that (it was okay when it rained and was wet, but in the dry it was horrible). It was always one of those jobs that would get done when everything else was sorted. As it needed a complete spray job, the colour change was no more work really than keeping it the same (I stripped all the separate panels off so the painter only had to sand, fill, flat and spray everything). It was going to be black, up until a month before it went in, when I saw an S2 for sale in Empire Green (Lotus only did 3 in that colour, and 2 were LHD and exported to Europe). I was at the airport going on holiday, so sent the seller (who I knew) an email saying I would have the car, but could I send him the money once I got to Tunisia, unless he could give me his bank details before I took off - and I'd pick it up in a fortnight. By the time I got off the plane I had a reply saying that he had sold it half an hour before getting my message, otherwise he'd have kept it for me..... bugger! To make it worse, the car was going to be exported to France, so none left in the UK.

Anyway, I decided that although they never did the SE in that colour, it was a genuine Lotus colour, and it would look good on the car, so that was what happened. There are now 3 in the UK, all have been painted by their owners in that colour.

As for the project car, again it is Pac Blue, and the paint is grotty enough to benefit from a repaint. Angie has never liked blue cars, and likes the Palacio Purple (again, only an S2 colour).... so part of the deal with getting the car was that she could have it purple...... except she decided she wanted my S2 wheels on it if it was Purple, so it would look right. That wasn't going to happen, so she decided to have it Norfolk Mustard, as that was her preference anyway (and she was winding me up with the wheels as she knew she wouldn't get them!).

So both are 'proper' Lotus colours, and used on the Elan.... just not on mine at the factory!

Glad it worked out for you in the end, and hope the project car meets Angie's requirements and she's not just winding you up about wanting an Elan! Love the Empire Green colour too

I might reach out to Nick when I'm ready as I'm not too far from Sowerby Bridge - just gotta clear some space in the garage to put a car first

And you're close - if anything I'm one of them Lancs blokes that was tricked into moving onto the wrong side of the Pennines

Depending who I ask, the answer to the question of "which is the right side of the Pennines?" varies! I have lots of friends who come from up that way, some are Lancs, some are Yorks, some don't even think Mancs are Lancs...... I just like to wind them all up over a beer and let them go!
