been to see an m100 but it's got issues

i first post on here so thought i would first say hi, I previously owned an M100 6 years ago but had to sell it to buy a house. Im now in the hunt for another, went to see one today but it had a few issues more cosmetic than anything but I have no idea how much it would cost to put them right. Here is a list of what concerned me so if someone could give me an idea on the cost to put right I would really appreciate it!

It's an SE 91 51k in metalic grey, currently being advertised on autotrader for £4999 ish

- A Pillar seals perished
- 5mm gap in roof seals above the drivers/passenger side window, as we were driving along you could really notice the wind howling in
- Rain leaking through at the rear top of the drivers/passenger door
- disks look a bit pitted, i would probably look to uprate the brakes and i've seen some options mentioned on here but have no idea on cost?

Basically the hood seals look like they need to be replaced all round and needs to be adjusted.

Bodywork wise looks like it has had a minor scrape on the rear right corner so the bumper could probably do with a respray

If thats all whats wrong with it then IMHO thats a good buy with only 51k on the clock.
A Pillar seals can be had from Lotus (IIRC £150 a pair)
Glass and the seal above the glass can be adjusted
Most of us suffer with roof leaks and most just live with it
Front stock disc can be had cheap aprrox £25 pair
Front Brake upgrade approx £500

Bumper respray may cost you £300 at a guess.

Hey, I live in Winchester in Hampshire.

The car was pretty noisy, air noise through the roof and lots of creaks which i know alot of them have but this one did seem to be a lot worse. I guess i was just a bit put off due to it being a bit tatty all around bodywork and interior. I know it's not major stuff though...

I see a BRG has come up on the for sale section, looks really tidy but it's in halifax which is pretty far away to pop up and see.

texas, yeah I had a look at the silver one! Really liked it but was a bit worried by the high mileage? I think it had done 112k? What does everyone think, would this be a problem? I would like to get an everest chip installed once i get one would that be advisable for this type of mileage??? Bear in mind i do tend to drive my cars hard I guess i worry that the engine wouldn't stand up to this?

The engine will stand high mileages as long as it's been looked after. Mine has just clicked to 100k and still runs sweet as a nut. No burning oil, no nasty noises, just smooth as a velvet cod piece. I only do around 1000 miles a year though as it is purely a sunny day car, but still change the oil twice a year and the filter once.

The silver one on Pistonheads is mine - So I know it is good - if you look on my blog you can see some photos and details of it's rebuild - I have lots more photos as well

These engines are known to go on and on - I have heard of some clocking over 200k miles - I am only up the road from you so you are welcome to come and have a look

Mine's done 130k.

Everything people say about these cars taking high mileage in their stride is quite correct, and I'd rather have a well-looked after, regularly used Elan than a 25k mile car that has been mouldering in a garage, gathering cobwebs, for a decade or two.

But such high mileage does have an impact on market value.

There are a lot of cars with more than 100k on the market at pretty ambitious prices. You shouldn't let high mileage put you off, but nor should you pay through the nose for such a car.

When I'm next in Winch (I often am) I'll let you know and you can see a rough one in the flesh!

I've got 138K on one, and 125k on the other - both with 'chips' (in ECU & paintwork ) - both used as daily drivers.

As stated elsewhere - sensible, regular use and good maintenance are the key to longevity.
