Was the Elan SE made in 1993?

Postby stevieg8571 » Fri 12.08.2005, 16:49

Hi,
Last week I went to look at a Aqua Met Blue Elan SE, (93)L Reg'd, near me that I hoped would be my 1st taste of owning one of these cars, but after checking the car with DVLA and HPI, who both said everything was OK, the insurance company I was going to use said that if it was made in 1993 (which the owner, DVLA, and HPI agree it was) it'll only come up on their system as an S2! I know S2's weren't made then, but that company won't insure me until the matter's resolved. Any ideas anyone?

Anyone know of any Elans for sale in the Preston area?

Hope to hear from someone soon,

Steve.

As far as i'm aware production of SE's stopped in 92, however cars were still being 'registered' in 93.
Mines a K plate 93 but ive never heard of a L plated Elan before :?
having said that i seem to recall my missus saying a friends sister at work used to own an L plate Elan but i dismissed it as nonsense women speak

Thanks for the reply. I thought the same as you, ie,. that production stopped in 92, but the HPI does say manufactured and registered in 1993!!

Stevie,
See here for production figures:
http://www.gglotus.org/ggtech/m100-prod ... 00prod.htm

I think these are accurate enough, but if you contact Lotus they will confirm when SE production ended. Surely your insurance company will take the word of Lotus over that of HPI.

It doesn't sound like an HPI check is all that accurate. :(

I have 10 L Reg's on my register and only 1 is an SE that was registered in Oct 93.
Let me have the details and I'll then have 2 SE's

Back in the "bad-old-days" of emissions-testing I was repeatedly told that my Triumph TR8 "did not exist", as it was not in their computer! Even after showing them the emissions plaque (anyone in the USA will know what I mean, it is a legal requirement), they declined to believe the car was ever legally imported. Most times they tested it as a TR7 (a lowly 4-cylinder!) and it still passed.
