Gents,
[Moderator mode] - Please play nicely [/Moderator mode]

[Pinky mode]
I'm starting to feel a little bit 'short changed' with reading this thread......

Firstly, I think we have established that there are few MINT elans out there - most are loved and driven - they are what they are.

Secondly, Probably the best Elan on the market (in USA!) - owned by a real enthusiast - failed to even get a dialogue going between potential buyer & seller (through no fault of the current owner, who tried to help). I see that as just plain ignorance.

Thirdly, do we really care how much cash anyone has in the bank? (unless we work for the IRS).

Fourthly, I feel really inadequate now (compared to Pete) - but It's enough to fill 2 prams and I never fail to satisfy myself.

Fifthly, there are people I know (on here, and in real life) who have so much money that they can't count it - but most are still really nice guys with no need to flaunt it in the face of others. One in particular (he's the father of a girl i went to college with and used to give a lift to ocassionally - first time I met him, he looked like he hadn't got enough change to buy a pint of milk. He asked me if I could do him a favour and accompany him to the garage to collect his car. We climbed into my Cortina and drove into Bristol, chatting happily about all sorts of things, wherupon we arrived at a showroom where he was handed the keys to his nice new Aston V8 Vantage (1980). I followed him back to his house (mansion) at Portishead and got invited to tea. I was given the guided tour (which took a while), and then into the underground garage where there were another 3 Astons, a couple of 'Everyday' BMW 7 series, and a Europa Special. As I had a Europa Special at the time which I was rebuilding, he immediately offered me a ride in his - allowing me to drive. After tea (homemade by his wife) he let me take the 'old' Aston out for a spin - well, it was sort-of old, as a 1971 DBS. We remained friends and I often used to visit, even getting invited to the Isle of Wight for Cowes week - his mum had a 'small place' over there where he kept most of his cars and yachts. I was a bit dissapointed when he said we wouldn't be going in the AMV8, but cheered up a bit when he talked about taking his own 'plane. I spent a week with the familly in IOW, was taught the basics of sailing, and allowed to drive a few of the cars he kept there (I think I was only really there to chauffeur his mum about a bit, but as it was a different car every day, I didn't care).
My (ex) wife and I were invited to Alex's (my college friend) wedding and I've never been anywhere posher - including the Royal palaces I've visited, but Tony still found time to sit and chat with us for a good length of time. I believe that the wealth in that room would have put many 1st World countries to shame, let alone 3rd World ones - but I never felt particularly out of place as they were all 'real' people with a genuine interest in others' life experiences..... Most 'rich/posh' people I have met are just the same.

The worst seem to be those who have married into money (I include some Royalty in that group) - but those who know the value of life don't care. Prince Micheal of Kent lent me his Range Rover at Badminton one Boxing day so that I could visit my family when my shift ended. Snow was thick on the ground and my 'job' car wasn't best suited to the conditions - what a nice bloke he is! But his missus - well, 'nuff said!

Lastly, we are all here because of a common interest in the cars. Whether you are rich, comfortable, barely scaping through or up to your eyeballs in debt is of no concern of mine (or anybody else). If you want to drive a Lambo, good luck to you. If you see it as an investment, again I wish you luck - but there are better cars to buy purely for investment purposes, so I hope you get to enjoy it for what it is.

If, however, you're a bit of a Walt, then I hope you have at least enjoyed yourself here, and wish you well as you trundle across the desert in your Bronco.

And as Harry would say, aspire to driving an XR3i-turbo-nutter-bastard.

Steve,

I was in no way suggesting that Teds was better than yours (I've not seen either in the flesh, so it may or may not currently be) - the relevant bit being "On the market", and I believe that yours is a keeper!

Appologies if I suggested that his yellow one is better than your red one :bonk:

Come on people. We're a friendly bunch and usually give newbies some discretion until they get used to the helpful nature and ethos of LEC.

So welcome to Lotus38 and thank you for livening up the forum, but maybe you're not aware that Dani Behr never did get his Elan into production. I can appreciate how you would empathise with him.

Dave, no appology necessary. Ted's Elan is one of the best I have ever seen. People just like Red Sports Cars.

Back to the subject at hand the Maserati is a better driver and Track Car than the Lamo. My opinion :-D

Steve - Also driving cars that I need not mention.

Hi Phillip

Pleased to hear that your car search is finally over, like you I was looking for the perfect car. I've just found and bought a nice shiny yellow one!

Just a pity you weren't prepared to search across the water and I didnt know that you settle for anything else than Elan. I would have sold it on to you for $15,000 which is half what I paid but I am so stinking rich I don't care but don't usually like to talk about it - but here its between friends - right. These cars have sold at Auction in the UK for big money, its your favourite colour, will easily double in value in the next 3-5 years given it's the rare manual version, and as the second photo proves the chicks dig this A LOT more than a Lambo and A LOT LOT LOT more than the Elan.

I swore off lambos after my Diablo debacle, but you could have bought a newer one for 3/4 of the money: http://www.autotrader.ca/a/Lamborghini/ ... p=12_15_12
but I guess its not yellow. Keep in mind when you post something on the internet its there forever, redacting your surname on a contract doesn't work when you post it on your first picture, so anyone who googles Philip Hurlston of Houston now knows what you paid, and trying to double your money in 2-3 years may be tough, also its likely that in the future you will join a friendly Lambo site, and this thread, which doesn't exactly flatter you, will likely make it over there too. Its a beautiful looking car and I hope you enjoy the crap out of it, don't catch the curse of the low mileage car (been there done that, lost money) drive it, enjoy it, move on, happy trails.

The interesting thing about these 'Super Cars' is who buys them?

I was once at the Lotus dealership in Swindon (possibly, a lower, middle income town in Wiltshire) collecting some bits I'd had supplied off the Aftersales list (a tad embarrassing waiting for £50 worth of bits whilst surrounded by several millions of supercars, this Dealership doubles as the outlet for Marques such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc, etc). Anyway whilst waiting for someone to fetch my bits (probably from the broom cupboard) I was having a look at the cars, there was a Pistachio Lamborghini - truly garish - which particularly took my eye.

The salesman returned with my box and said 'fancy one?' I replied 'no way, I'd be terrified of damaging it or, worse, someone else damaging it in the car park etc' (I suspect that there is an income bracket that means such fears become irrelevant, but sadly I'm not in it). His response to that was that the guys who bought these cars didn't use them like that, they merely took them out of their garage, drove for five miles around the town and then returned them to their garage. Bizarre!!!! I asked him who these guys were that purchased such cars for such expensive jaunts - 'Footballers' was his response (Soccer to you guys over the pond). I was appalled that even Swindon Town footballers (then in the 2nd tier of English League) were paid the sort of cash that allows such purchasing power.

There really are so many things wrong with all of this!!!

But each to their own

No, it was always live, just that Lotus38' posts have all been deleted

However, I am pleased to report that the yellow Lambo should have arrived by now in sunny Houston. Those chicks will no doubt be queuing up ;-)
