Gents,

I'm starting to feel a little bit 'short changed' with reading this thread......
Firstly, I think we have established that there are few MINT elans out there - most are loved and driven - they are what they are.
Secondly, Probably the best Elan on the market (in USA!) - owned by a real enthusiast - failed to even get a dialogue going between potential buyer & seller (through no fault of the current owner, who tried to help). I see that as just plain ignorance.
Thirdly, do we really care how much cash anyone has in the bank? (unless we work for the IRS).
Fourthly, I feel really inadequate now (compared to Pete) - but It's enough to fill 2 prams and I never fail to satisfy myself.
Fifthly, there are people I know (on here, and in real life) who have so much money that they can't count it - but most are still really nice guys with no need to flaunt it in the face of others. One in particular (he's the father of a girl i went to college with and used to give a lift to ocassionally - first time I met him, he looked like he hadn't got enough change to buy a pint of milk. He asked me if I could do him a favour and accompany him to the garage to collect his car. We climbed into my Cortina and drove into Bristol, chatting happily about all sorts of things, wherupon we arrived at a showroom where he was handed the keys to his nice new Aston V8 Vantage (1980). I followed him back to his house (mansion) at Portishead and got invited to tea. I was given the guided tour (which took a while), and then into the underground garage where there were another 3 Astons, a couple of 'Everyday' BMW 7 series, and a Europa Special. As I had a Europa Special at the time which I was rebuilding, he immediately offered me a ride in his - allowing me to drive. After tea (homemade by his wife) he let me take the 'old' Aston out for a spin - well, it was sort-of old, as a 1971 DBS. We remained friends and I often used to visit, even getting invited to the Isle of Wight for Cowes week - his mum had a 'small place' over there where he kept most of his cars and yachts. I was a bit dissapointed when he said we wouldn't be going in the AMV8, but cheered up a bit when he talked about taking his own 'plane. I spent a week with the familly in IOW, was taught the basics of sailing, and allowed to drive a few of the cars he kept there (I think I was only really there to chauffeur his mum about a bit, but as it was a different car every day, I didn't care).
My (ex) wife and I were invited to Alex's (my college friend) wedding and I've never been anywhere posher - including the Royal palaces I've visited, but Tony still found time to sit and chat with us for a good length of time. I believe that the wealth in that room would have put many 1st World countries to shame, let alone 3rd World ones - but I never felt particularly out of place as they were all 'real' people with a genuine interest in others' life experiences..... Most 'rich/posh' people I have met are just the same.
The worst seem to be those who have married into money (I include some Royalty in that group) - but those who know the value of life don't care. Prince Micheal of Kent lent me his Range Rover at Badminton one Boxing day so that I could visit my family when my shift ended. Snow was thick on the ground and my 'job' car wasn't best suited to the conditions - what a nice bloke he is! But his missus - well, 'nuff said!
Lastly, we are all here because of a common interest in the cars. Whether you are rich, comfortable, barely scaping through or up to your eyeballs in debt is of no concern of mine (or anybody else). If you want to drive a Lambo, good luck to you. If you see it as an investment, again I wish you luck - but there are better cars to buy purely for investment purposes, so I hope you get to enjoy it for what it is.
If, however, you're a bit of a Walt, then I hope you have at least enjoyed yourself here, and wish you well as you trundle across the desert in your Bronco.
And as Harry would say, aspire to driving an XR3i-turbo-nutter-bastard.
