WTB M100, west coast USA

Postby FunElan » Mon 08.03.2021, 22:59

Hi all,

Similarly to the thread below, I'm in SoCal and looking for an M100. I'm currently helping my father restore his 69 Elan S4SE. I've grown up around his car and I think it's time to find a Lotus for myself :-)

I know they don't come up for sale often, and I have the alerts already configured on various sites. But just in case anyone hears of one, I wanted to make sure I posted!

Thanks,
Matt

bringatrailer.com usually has one up for sale once a month, I think a red one just went up for sale but in Canada (looks like a US import originally).

Autotempest.com is a pretty decent used car search engine as well- don't see anything legit on there at the moment. Not sure about California laws, but according to another thread you should be ok buying any M100 Elan that is 49 state legal (actually any M100 at all since they are over 25 years old - but not sure about import procedures)

Thanks for the responses all. Sorry for the delay in responding, for some reason I thought I'd get emailed if there were responses! I've been watching the red one on BAT. Currently considering another car on the east coast that has more maintenance history, but we'll see.

Is this one yours? https://vancouver.craigslist.org/rds/ct ... 66546.html

I was worried about importing something to California...but it looks like it could be possible

While it appears to be a lovely car, importing directly to CA might be nearly impossible. Or at least very difficult.

I still haven't driven an m100 yet (only a baby Elan), but I can tell that it's a car that meshes with my personality. I should probably meet a SoCal owner at some point.

Best to try before you buy...as for importing, I would discuss with a broker - I have imported/exported in the past and have found the small cost associated with using a broker to be worthwhile.

Not much different these days.

I have to agree with Mr. Sideways, its not impossible, its not even that difficult, and if you use a broker its painless (other than the fees which really aren't bad) Been there done that many times (including through the interesting past 12 months) brokers are slow right now and can be squeezed a little

California is a beautiful yet finicky state...while the US does let you import cars that are older than 25 years old, you might not be able to register them here. I think the cutoff might be 1967 and older. But since the canadian cars and the US cars look to be almost identical, I'm not sure if it's different for the Elan.
