Underneath Engine Protective Member

Hi friends,

The title is a bit stupid but couldn't think of a better one... Does Elan have a protective member underneath the engine? If it does what does it look like, does anyone have a picture of it? Is it the part presented in Parts Manual 30.15A G100A0274F Underframe Assembly?

Sorry if all that sounds silly, mine has something like that but it looks very non original and certainly not like the part mentioned above in the manual...

Has to be the original part as it won`t be off any other vechile and is also known as a Prongeron, if it`s different can you take a photo? The frame has nothing to do with protecting the engine, it`s all part of the suspension set up ie keeps the wheel vertical, hence why it should not be used as a jacking point.

I know the prongeron, there is something else on mine just underneath the engine, maybe I'm the one who should take a photo really. I'll jack it up and see if I can take a good shot. I'll be back tomorrow with a photo.

That does sound like an aftermarket part, maybe a sump Guard? Got me curious now, so lookforward to seeing the photo

LG if it was mine I would fill the front in, to act more as a skid plate with holes in for cooling, since the car is where it is federal springs and dampers might be an idea as they will increase ride height

From the front angle picture, does it extend to the left far enough to be a sump guard? - Could it be more of an exhaust guard?

Is it just me, or does it look like this guard has replaced the standard prongeon? Maybe it was fabricated as a replacement for a damaged prongeron.

Yeah extra protection on our roads is an excellent idea, I'm amazed that someone has thought about it and fabricated such a thing. The prongeron is still there with it's no jacking sign and jack marks. It doesn't cover the sump fully Sy but it would still help I think.

I couldn't really imagine the first part of your idea; do you mean extending it so that the front section (which is the first thing to get hit) will be covered as well? Fed springs could be an idea but all of the suspension was changed a year or so before I got the car. Since than it hasn't covered a lot of distance so they are quite new... Maybe a future project.

I think what he's saying is you'd want to slide atop an obstacle like an icebreaker slides on top of ice. Most guards I've seen have an upturned lip at the most forward edge. It beats just ramming into somthing.

I see the point now. I might give it a try but I'd also fear some idiot might ruin it.
