NEW HYDRAULIC PUMP

Hello guys...
i want to ask you and hear some opinions..
my mechanical told me that i could replace the steering wheel pump with a new one just for making the st. wheel softer. not much, but a bit softer than it is. so does anyone here have done it? or know sometyhing about that?

Its still not clear exactly what you are asking? You can replace your old power steering pump with a new one, they are still available in the Lotus parts sale and this may lighten up the steering if that's what you mean? Another way to do this would be to fit a larger steering wheel than the one you have on the car at present.

to do this would mean the use of an aftermarket pump and could lead to all sorts of problems initially I would say the fitting would be different and then the pressures...all would need balancing
which bit of the steering do you not like?....
it was designed for the perfect response at speed rather than being light to the touch for parking etc....
then I guess if it could be done you would need to find out which pump would give you the 'just lighter' feel....and how lighter is 'just lighter'?
I dont know of anyone who has anything other than standard.........

I agree with Mr. elanman - changing the pump would present a lot of potential problems with fitting, etc. If you want to lighten the steering try changing the wheels to 17" from the stock 16" size. In the end, it might end up costing almost the same but look better from the outside When I chnaged the wheel size I felt an immediate sense of the steering being lighter.

i'd like to have 17'' wheels but i like those wheels i got now the S2 i mean. so beautiful.. cant find anything better and i am goint to paint them white!!!
so about the pump i understand what you're saying about problems etc but my mechanic told me that he has to check it first and then propose me something else for lighter steering. anyway we will see

I have limited knowledge of the power steering options, but i would think that to get a lighter feel to the steering, a change in valve sizes in the rack may be the way forward.

Personally i find it okay as it is, even with a smaller steering wheel (elise) fitted my wife can cope, so it can't be that heavy.
