How can I safely take off the prongeron?

Postby mikeydude » Wed 04.12.2013, 16:02

Hi People..sorry to bother again...but can anyone confirm that I can take the prongeron off completely to get to the gear box drive shaft seal with the weight of the car still on the wheels as people have spoken about the wheels splaying out...I don't want the car collapsing on me!!
I need the car on the ramps really to get it high enough up.
If not, is the best way to support it on the jack positions on both sides?

Mikey:

You need to support the car. The wheels have to come off

The jacking points are the only place to support so there is no stress/strain on the suspension.
You might want to make a cross bar that fits the jacking pins (like the picture under your jack thread) so you have a good place to put jack stands.

The prongeron will be detached from the raft and the chassis.

Just to add to John's advice, I recently removed mine despite my worries as I had never done it before. It was actually quite straightforward.

I put axle stands below the front A post jacking points, then, with wheels removed, supported the front suspension on both sides with 2 further axle stands. This prevents the suspension collapsing/splaying and keeps all the holes lined up for easy replacement. Don't move anything once in position and with the prongeron off.

Worked treat, with only one bolt of the 10 or so being slightly difficult to slide back in.

Good luck!
