Owatrol and Hammerite

Having struggled with rust on Land Rover chassis for many years I am satisfied with Owatrol Oil and Hammerite. I used the same method on chassis, suspension and other parts on my M100. Remove loose rust with a wire brush. It is not necessary to grind down to bare metal. Paint with Owatrol until the metal is soaking wet. Let Owatrol dry a day. Owatrol is colorless. Paint then with Hammerite. It is important NOT to use spray paint because Owatrol will bubble. Use Hammerite from tin. Other type of paint will certainly also be ok but do a test. I'm checking underneath the car every year and repeats the process on rust spots and/or bare metal (normally not many places).

My experience with this process is very good and I have a Land Rover Discovery 1 with very little rust (unusual for an old Disco 1!) and hope my Lotus M100 will be the same.

I've always found Hammerite to be really poor…perhaps in the past my metal prep wasn't that good and this prevented it performing as well as POR15 which seems to stick to anything. Never heard of Owatrol so its a good tip, if it gets metal good enough for Hammerite to last a year on, imagine how good it will be with a better paint!

Owatrol sticks very well to metal (and other materials). After drying it is still a little glue-like. My experience (with Land Rover, offroading and salty roads) is that the combination Owatrol and Hammerite last for several years. An alternative is to mix Owatrol with other paint so that the paint becomes stronger. Personally I like Owatrol very well because it is a "natural product" and not doing any harm to other materials
If the surface is slightly oily, Owatrol will be mixed with oil and form a good base for paints. I also use Owatrol on brake pipes to clean and protect.
NB! May be it looks like I'm selling Owatrol, I do not (!), I just love Owatrol after many years treatment of cars and boats.
