Need Help cropping music files

Postby Doug » Thu 27.01.2011, 07:25

Howdy all. I am in need of some help/advice.

I am in charge of putting some music files along with picture files for a slideshow. What I need to learn/do is to take some .mp3 files and snip/edit them so I'm using only a portion of the full songs. Then they will either be played as tracks individually, or for extra credit I could have them fade in and out or cross-fade!

I assume I'm looking for a program to first edit the files.

If there's a program to fade/crossfade then, lemme know.

TIA,

Doug

You could try Audacity:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
It's pretty good for free software. I think it will let you splice multiple tracks together and sort out levels etc, although if it's a long bit of music it will probably use a lot of memory!

I use Camtasia Studio for all such things - It'll do the lot!

The full program is available as a free download with a 30-day trial period from TechSmith.com - then you need to send them some cash (was $300 when i looked at it) and they send you an activation code.

Alternatively, if you have merely 'lost' your already-purchased access code, i could send it to you by PM

The big advantage of Camtasia is that it integrates with PowerPoint etc to create a full A/V presentation.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

This is one of the few things I can do on a computer!

Felt Tip's Sound Studio (used to be free, may still be) will do what you want and is easy and intuitive to use, but you can edit mp3s in iTunes. (Get info>options>start and stop times).

I got Audacity too. It's free and will do what you want. My daughter uses it to put together the mixes her cheeleading squad uses for their dance routines.

I use Adobe Audition but it's very expensive to purchase new. +1 for Audacity. I use it under Linux for basic functions like you describe and reboot to Windoz only when I need Audition's power. PM or give me a call if you need help or moral support.

Thanks for the help, guys!

I've downloaded Audacity and will try it this weekend. If Chris' daughter can use it for routine music making, I should be able to figure that out in a week or month or so...

A program that can do this as well as help you organize the the photos and synch the music with them is ProShow. Not free, but will let you make a pretty impressive slide show. It has a graphical interface that lets you fade two tunes into one another and just slide them where you want to go and drag a "V" shape that adjusts the rate of fade.
