Needs must so I'm going to get rid of my Elan as I need to get a car my son can drive when he passes his test.

Very good condition with the following mods.
Hi spec front upgraded brakes
PNM rear upgrade brakes
Honda S2000 black leather seats (I have and excellent pair of standard seats that could be swapped back if buyer prefers)
GAZ adjustable shocks all round with 20% upgraded front and standard rear springs about 2 years ago
MOMO wheel ( again can put original back on)
Rubber a pillar seals
AB cables and short shift
Remote electric boot release
Sony radio will Bluetooth phone connection
Compact subwoofer behind passenger seat
Just had all belts and water pump
2 new Khumo front tyres
Fitted lotus mats
It has a stainless exhaust which sounds great
Clear lenses all round
Toad alarm with 2 keywords
Tonneau cover
All the wishbones are treated and painted with Por15 and in good condition
I have the toolbox (non penknife one)
Limited edition Billet oil filler cap

If I was keeping I would do the following:
1) passenger intermediate seal would be changed next year as I've repaired a small part with sikaflex
2) repaint the front bumper as it was scuffed earlier this year and I don't think the paint colour match is good enough. I posted pics of the damage if you have a search for my posts.

The car has been serviced by my mechanic for the last 6 years according to the lotus schedule and I have a stack of history. I also have lots of Mot's.

Will be sadly missed but it seems that it's going to cost a fortune to get a 17 year old on the road legally

Its a shame that you have to sell but young drivers seem to be hit a lot harder by insurance now than we were at that age.
It would still be good to see you at an event. I had better get out to some more myself!
Maybe you can get another Elan in the future, or dare I say it, find a car you like even more?

Rip it's £2k insurance on a car that costs about along with another £1k for lessons and a test beats my £60 for car and £80 insurance when I started out

Pete, He is going to college and I either have to drive him there 4 days a week at 50+ miles a day (there and back twice) and 2hrs of my time or spend £20+ a day on fares and he has a 5hr round trip then. So in the long run getting him on the road will be not much dearer hopefully.

Dave, He would love to work but no one wants to employ a 16/17 year old it seems, it's tough enough trying to get work experience.

Ah well I do understand that, my nephew and niece had to attend Uni/college at a similiar distance and public transport is both expensive and impracticable, IIRC both used their Student Loan to buy and run their cars. My own kids 'lived in' and consequently are in debt to the Govt for the inflated accd costs incumbant (Everytime the Govt raises the Student Loan the local Landlords must rub their hands in glee!). Personally, I learned quite late I don't think for me it would have been a great idea to have been licensed to drink and to drive at almost the same time fortunately I lived in Greater London so transport wasn't such an issue.

I know, glad I'm most of the way through my working life wouldn't want to start now. Trying not to let Henry get saddled with lots of debt before he really starts out if we can and whilst I love the car it would nearly finance his first year of motoring

As a bit of a guide (and I know that there are lots of variables in Insurance rates)....

.... I bought a Peugeot 106 for my sons' 18th birthday. Car cost £500, with a years MOT on it. Tax was £105 for a year, Insurance was £1200 (fully comp, no NCB, Provisional licence holder).

As he had no claims in the year, the renewal came in at £515, which I thought was a bit of a bargain.

That was with Elephant insurance (part of the Admiral group).

Dave thanks I've been looking at the 106 and 207 and insurance is around £1500 with a black box but some of them really penalise anything that they believe is poor driving and can then add a considerable hike to the premium. Insurance without the box starts at £1800.

Adding old fogies (yes I do mean you!) as named drivers can bring premiums down. Work the compare sites with as many options as you can as it sometimes throws up bizarre results e.g. cheaper on the drive than in the garage and try out multicar policies - the more cars you add, the bigger the discount on all of them.

I would strongly suggest that you don't do it the other way round and have the policy in your name with Henry as a named driver - 2 reasons for that:-

1) He won't necessarily build up any NCB - although some companies will allow it (Admiral)

2) - more importantly, should he have a prang which results in a claim ('own goals' into a ditch are not worth claiming for!!!) it will affect any other insurance policies you run for your main car in your name.

Thanks Dave and Geoff will only do it the right way round. I don't see the point in trying to cheat the system as it always bites you in the arse in the end. I will look at being a named driver though
