How to replace the water pump?

Hy to all guys. It's a lot of time I was away from here. But now is time to come back. Come back with my Elan!

Just ready for the summer only with a problem, MY NEW WATER PUMP IS CRYING!!!
So, I need check it or replace again, but it's realy complicate. Can somebody say me the right procedure to take out the water pump? There is an impossible bolt that don't come away without dismantle ALL the car! It's the down bolt on the right. Where I'm wrong?

...are we talking about the bolt that can only be removed by lifting the cambelt end of the engine, here?

The water pump is run from the timing (cam) belt...so that has to come off.
I think it is the crank pulley bolt that you mean. That is quite tight, then the pulley wheel resists removal too.
The timing belt runs around an engine mount...so that has to be released. The steering pump belt & alternator/AC belts have to come off first.

I would advise replacing all the belts you have removed as well as the timing belt's tensioner & idler bearings. You may as well replace all these together while they are off. You won't be wanting to go back to do them in the near future!

Oops! I'm sorry. Here two pics to explane, one from under and one from above.

In BLUE the FUNNY bolt that I need to unscrew. In RED the piece that give problems.

All the belts and the tensioner and the idler bearings are new, only some km done. Now I need to kill the man who did the work. He told me that he replaced all the pieces included the the water pump, but I can't belive. The water pump don't look's like new.....

What does the servicing manual say?
You did download it before asking didn't you?

Oh yes, I have! But it's realy poor in words.
On the manual this operation look's like very simple and need only 4 hours!!!! (I think 4 years!)

I've just had a quick look at the manual. It doesnt mention anything about removing any other items apart from the cam belt.

From your first picture it looks as though the head of the bolt has been rounded, so someone in the past has had difficulty with this bolt as well. and is probably why you think the water pump wasnt replaced when you had the other work done.

So rounded bolt head, combined with lack of room to swing the sledge hammer, I think you're going to have a bit of fun

If you think that removing the red circled part will help i can only suggest that it is bolted through from the front of the block.

And so......nobody has replace the water pump himself?

is that not the bracket that the PAS pump is attached to? i had to remove that bracket to do the head gasket and to do that had to remove the bolts to the PAS pump and push it to one side get to the bolts for the bracket

Memories a bit shot but when I did mine last year for sure I did not remove that big bracket!
I seem to recall using a cranked ring spanner, undoing the bolt all the way but it would not come out of the hole until I took all the others out and slid the pump sideways a touch
Can you get a spanner on it or is the head rounded off ?

I would have thought you could get to it with either the third or fourth type of 'must have spanners for Elan owners'. Good luck!
