Foam around HVAC pipes disintegrated...

Started seeing black foam dust in the passenger footwell and figured out that the foam surrounding the heater vent pipes, one of which runs just behind the glove box, has completley turned to junk. When I opened the box all the way it just falls apart like the books on the shelf in The Time Machine (in the future, when all the evolved humans are morons and don't read). Anyway, I figure this isn't probably ALL that dangerous or anything, just less efficient. Is the foam a replaceable part? Is this common? The lighter-grey foam in other areas back there is still nice and spongy, just the dark stuff is toast.

This is fun. Every time you post something to the forum it is like re-living my own first Elan experience years ago, you make me feel young again After you have had an Elan for some time or several as in my case you tend to forget all about these first time concerns and issues. Most people at LEC have been around the Elan so long that we simply pass-up this issues and don't even mention them

I will tell you that so far everything you are experiencing is very normal

Dear Randy:

Remember, these cars are being affected by both distance AND time. Go down to JoAnn Fabrics and get yourself a bunch of foam rubber (I used one-quarter and half inch when I re-did mine) and a roll of 3M (I think) or Dupont automotive duct tape from Home Depot. It is like regular duct tape but clear/white-ish in appearance.

Wrap and tape. Then wrap and tape your cut and bleeding hands. Then take off your steering wheel, facia mask and dashboard and do the job properly.
