Coolex Discount?

Postby Simon_P » Sun 09.08.2020, 16:06

It's a while since I last bought a radiator.
Do we still get an LEC discount with Coolex? Must be some opportunity vs the ebay price.

Also are the mounting pins now in the correct place?

It's only a small leak... Honest!

The mounting pins didn't matter very much for the ROW car. I expect the missing spacers weren't a problem since nobody complained.

The mounting for the US car was completely different and the pins had to be modified with spacers to fit the brackets.

The eBay price is a LOT lower than the Lotus price of £596.49 and 50quid less than SJ's price

Yes, but I've already rebuilt the front suspension and the engine, so it is just a small leak!
It's been weeping for a couple of years and I ought to do something about it.

Thanks John,
The pins were mounted one diameter out ie their centre was on the outer edge of the correct pin position, while it still just went into the mounting you had to leave the grommets off and pack it out. Lots of people complained but it wasn't a big enough issue and as you point out the the alternative was £600. Do you know if the issue was corrected?

The radiator pins on the one I have were correctly spaced and fit the US car mounting points fine but without the platforms that bridged the "U" plates at the bottom pins, the radiator just fell into the mounts.

They did add the platforms and their new pictures show them.

I don't know about the pin locations because the stock radiator fit the US car and so does the Coolex one.

I got involved quite late in their program, so maybe the radiator I got had the pin locations fixed but still didn't work on the US car.

The one I have fits nice and cleanly in the factory mountings.

I think I have a UK radiator frame here somewhere. I might be able to compare the locations between the two versions.

I bought a UK spec radiator from Coolex, and it fits my frame absolutely fine.

Did it go in the grommets (at the top not the bottom that is ok) and in the centre of the hole? Or did you have to put it in without the grommets?

The radiator I used to test and modify, fit in the original UK car mounting frame with the stock lower and upper bushings.

Adding the spacers for existing radiators sold to the US solved a couple of complaints immediately and Coolex modified the design making it a universal fit on all versions.

I did this back in July of 2016, so if you are aware of issues after January 2017, then I don't know.

I’d have to check, Simon (as you know the car’s not physically chez moi at present), but as I recall it went straight in with grommets, just like the old one came out.

Mine went in with new grommets - eventually.
It was a bit of a fiddle but got there in the end.
I got the rad etch primed and painted by coolex for an extra 15 quid IIRC.

Thanks All, I'll give them a ring tomorrow.

Jonathan, Ron, Thanks, the grommets can be a bit of a pain as they push through, but they wouldn't go on at all with the pin centres wrong.

I had absolutely no problems with Coolex and would thoroughly recommend them. Very professional and would have no problems using them again

I like the look of their alloy header tank with sight glass and might get one in the future as I always feel that the only thing that lets the engine bay down is the grotty, discoloured header tank. I saw one of these in situ on one of Jim's (Muley) M100's and it looked the bizz

PS @Simon - I can't remember my mechanic saying there were problems with the grommets :smt017
