The 1991 system was R12. Those look like R12 connectors and I don't think lotus changed them even for the R134a system, anyway it doesn't matter as you can buy the converter which screws on.
There are a few technical differences between the systems. Seals, Oil and operating pressure are the ones to keep in mind.
R12 has a slightly lower pressure meaning that conversion to R134a will be less efficient (you won't notice).
A lot is written about molecule size and leakage - in practice this means that you have to change the seals that you can get to and run the system regularly.
Oil - R12 uses mineral oil and 134a uses PAG the two are not compatible, but that isn't a problem. In practice you need to remove as much oil as possible, there is a drain in the compressor, you can remove the condenser and you will need to change the receiver drier - the black cylinder as you need a new one anyway. Some people say you need to flush the system, but as the small amount of mineral oil doesn't mix it will eventually migrate to the receiver drier.
Your first stop should be with an A/C specialist at least to identify if it is leaking and if you are doing any work yourself to make sure it is safely depressurised.
Get a quote for doing the job - you won't need more than a few o rings, adapters, a receiver drier, oil and gas - that's about £100. Anything that is broken and labour are where the cost comes in.
