Thats because its an F put a GB on and you'll get stopped regularly. The French stop the Brits to make it look like they're doing something. Passport check, document check, vehicle check, baggage check, sniffer dog check, fire extinguisher check, headlight check, yellow jacket check. I've had them all and usually when returning home, which is obviously pointless.
Drive a British registered car in Europe and you'll get stopped. Except for Holland where they are very nice!

Neil, I'm interested how has Brexit had an effect on travel to Europe? The only thing I'm aware of is the reintroduction of green cards and that's not exactly onerous.

Hi Simon, just a few of the top of my head,
The green card as you mention is a detail
The length of stay in Europe is now limited
You can no longer reside in Europe unless you have a residency permit (same applies in the UK if you are not British)
Student exchanges either way are now complex
Border controls will become stricter for a while

Of course the current sanitary situation is not helping all of this.

Hi again Simon.

Yes, I have ben back and forth more time than I care to remember, both with UK a nd French registered cars.
I was check once on Dover around 1984/85 when I arrived in a french registered Triumph Spitfire. My young age at the time triggered a customs search.
Between France and Switzerland , I was also pulled at the same period (same car) for having yellow dip dim, and a set of white spot lights, cost me around 450 french francs at the time :-(
Otherwise, "touch wood", I have never been bothered while travelling in Europe (I, E, D, NL, B SLO, as the main ones)
I also agree it is pointless checking somebody leaving a country.

Hehe this reminds me of when I used to travel regularly to The Netherland for work in my old TR6. Once coming back via Calais I took a 'scenic ' route. At the tiny Belgium France border post they thoroughly searched my car, found my perfectly legal bottles of Grolsch and left them with lots of the 'cardboard' panels on the roadside with a Gallic shrug when they gave me back my passport. Same at Dover on the same trip. I used to get more back for the empty bottles in Putney than I paid for the full ones in Rotterdam
