Thats because its an F put a GB on and you'll get stopped regularly. The French stop the Brits to make it look like they're doing something. Passport check, document check, vehicle check, baggage check, sniffer dog check, fire extinguisher check, headlight check, yellow jacket check. I've had them all and usually when returning home, which is obviously pointless.
Drive a British registered car in Europe and you'll get stopped. Except for Holland where they are very nice!

Yes, I have ben back and forth more time than I care to remember, both with UK a nd French registered cars.
I was check once on Dover around 1984/85 when I arrived in a french registered Triumph Spitfire. My young age at the time triggered a customs search.
Between France and Switzerland , I was also pulled at the same period (same car) for having yellow dip dim, and a set of white spot lights, cost me around 450 french francs at the time

Otherwise, "touch wood", I have never been bothered while travelling in Europe (I, E, D, NL, B SLO, as the main ones)
I also agree it is pointless checking somebody leaving a country.
