Photo Attachment Quotas

Postby TStevens » Fri 06.01.2006, 18:46

As some of you may be aware theres a per user limit of how much space can be used for storing pictures. This was set to 2mb per person.

The webhosting company we use have just updated their hosting plans, and after speaking with Doug & Sy we have agreed we can increase this limit to 5mb per person.

The per file limitations are still in place for sanity reasons, however splendid your exhaust is we dont need 5mb 8 megapixel pictures of them posted to the forum.

For those that feel the limitations are restrictive please understand that with 1500 users to date, if they all suddenly decided to use just 2mb of their usage allowance we would have 3gb of member uploaded images! As a reality check, the hosting plan LEC used to be on limited us to 200mb of hard drive space. (this is now not that case, and our hosting plan details/costs will not be disclosed at this time). We could give you more room, but we want the site to have space to grow

Tony,

Is there somewhere that we can check how much of our quota we have used, so that if it's getting marginal we can delete old or no-longer-relevant stuff?

Having said that, I suppose if we stick to 600x400 JPEGs then that's a helluva lot of pics! Surely hardly anyone really needs to post any pic bigger than 50Kb (other than in exceptional circumstances like the annual sale lists).

Also, did I see somewhere that there is a picture limit per thread for people? Just thinking ahead to Donington etc - some people took a lot of really good ones last year, and it would be a shame for them to be strictly limited.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

Neil ;-)

If you got click your profile button it will show you there, and it will show you where you have pictures etc.

I agree 50kb is about most needed for a forum sized image, but the limit is set to a max of 256kb/image, and theres a limit of 5 images per post, this is to stop us from getting hugely long posts meaning that it takes an hour to get to the bottom fo a page. Just reply again and add more pictures.

If the webhost carries on like they are, every 6months or so we can up peoples limits anyway, its mainly to stop people from posting junk that doesnt really need to be stored here.
