Just an Idea..but I have my own web server (I supply web space, email facilities and deign ecommerce web sites - for people to sell online)
I could set up a chat room if anyone fancies it? it's just that I see that there are often several people online at once and I think forums are usefull places but can be soul less! Give me your opinions and if people seem up for it I could whizz it together in secconds and perhaps a link could be added to it from lec

worth a try, as long as the usual suspects don't pretend to be girls just for fun . . .

Mikey, if you have certain software in mind get in touch, we can easily host something on the LEC server, and hook into the forum MySQL database. Reason we hadn't tried anything yet is due to my lack of knowledge with different software.
Drop me a PM.

Wouldn't it get a bit complicated with all those empty bean cans on the end of a bit of string!

TStevens,
There are various easy to use packages available these days...the catch comes with getting it to tie in with the forum member names..you may just have to use your names each time you sign in as "nick names"
Plus it will be fine with say upto 20 users but after that the bandwidth usage may be an issue with your server provider.
I will try a few out on our server and see how it goes.....then we could put it on the lec server.

LEC has a 1.3tb/month bandwidth allowance, so shouldn't be an issue.
I've seen some chat software before but I've not really liked them, hence we didn't implement them at the same time as the LEC makeover.
If any can tie into an SQL database for usernames and passwords or PHPBB that would be rather handy.
Unfortunately as we're not running on a dedicated box or VPS, we can't run server side apps.

We have shell access, but we cant run our own apps/services on the server as it's shared hosting. (suits our needs quite well though)

What about this:
http://www.freejavachat.com/about.html
I've only spent about 30 secs looking at it, but it would appear to be a good starting point at least.
If something like this were set up and did get some serious use we could then look at a dedicated service.
Just my 2p

We will be looking for software that will run from within LEC itself to help continue the seamless experience we already offer. We do not want users having to sign up to alternative websites to use the chat facility etc.
There are a lot of free applications but not many of actually that if you have more than about 5 people in the chat room, as well as the lack of compatibility with varying web browsers and languages. I've found some Java websites that wont work if you dont have your keyboard layout set to US English.
I'll see what Mikey can come up with from the angle of a professional solution before we start looking at free software, as we definatley don't want somethign that will slow down the rest of LEC.
