I produced the following from a collection of car photos...

I wanted to try and put together something similar (better hopefully) using photos from Stoneleigh of everyones cars. Do you think any car owners would mind?

very cool, but I'm seeing other Lotuses, ferraris, porsches, and not any BRG Elans in there. Do you need more M100 pictures?

when can we have Wilco print that out flag size for worldwide distribution . .

well, actually to keep it interesting in a "Where's Wally" style there is exactly one M100 in there. A beer at Stoneleigh to the first person to find it

As for printing out, well that is really my intention and I wanted to gauge people's opinion. I certainly wouldn't suggest this image, because as you say, there are very few lotuses in there (and besides, I don't own the copyright to any of these images so this is just an experiment really) - hence wanting to produce one using images from Stoneleigh.

The cost of printing out at sufficient size to really be able to see the individual tiled images (which would be the fun bit of course as it would feature everyone's cars) is quite high. For A1 size, it's a fair few hundred quid to get the plates made up (don't even think about the costs of inkjet printing at that size!). I'm hoping to produce similar type images for other events as well, get them printed up as large scale posters and sell them. If it was done well, would anybody be interested in having a large poster of it sent out to them for a price (I'm thinking around 20 quid with a few takers should be possible)?

If you're willing to sell the BIG file, I'd certainly be interested. In the alternative, sell a poster size of it, I'll take two! One for me and one for Rita's previous owner. :wink:

Ahhhh, I was hoping to track down the original owner of that picture! Glad it was still recognisable

I hope you don't mind my borrowing it for this example, but it was such a nice shot of the car that it seemed perfect.

Selling the image is possible, although I wouldn't charge you anything for it. The trouble is that you can't do a lot with it - it's HUGE. Printing at any sort of large size is something that requires printing in bulk to be feasble from a cost perspective. It scales nicely past a point, but the up front costs are high. It's certainly not something I would want to do for one or two prints.

edit: that should really read "not something I would recommend doing" in the last line

well, to generate one that was good enough to print at A1 with sufficient quality, a fair few hundred MB. Depends on a few factors

I'd have to give you something for a licensing right to it. The creation is yours, and as such, it's your intellectual property. The only thing I'd be interested is making copies for personal use. Depending upon where you got the individual pictures, they may be public domain. They'd have a hard time making the argument that your use of their individual picture violated any copyright they might have had.
And since we're on the topic of copyrights, make sure you stick a copyright somewhere on the picture.
Finally, in the spirit of LEC, you're welcome to the original image so long as it helps propogate enthusiasm in the M100 and LEC.

I'm still interested in purchasing the original picture, however large it might be in digital form.
Could you create this picture with M100 pics?

Well, you can download the "zoomed" image off the site here:

that is 1800 wide so should make a reasonable background on your computer.

That is the largest I have produced of this one at the moment. The source images allow for it to go up to 38,400 pixels wide without stretching the original tile images but that would take a little while. You also touch on the fact that I dont own any of the individal images either... they were.... er... borrowed.... much like your own.

Help yourself to that image off the webserver. However, the one using Stoneleigh pictures would be better I think and would contain a strong proportion of M100s amongst other Lotus cars.

Regarding making one with just M100s, I'd be happy to do it if I had enough images. The one here used 3600 individual images - there are no repeated ones at all and 3600 was the number of images I had, so basically, everything I had, had to go in there somewhere as best as possible.

Fubar, are you by any chance of lawyer?

Yes, I'm a lawyer. Unfortunately, my forte seems to convince potential and current clients not to need my services as there's a non-judicial solution that will cause significantly less bloodshed. I sleep poor, but sleep happy.

PM me if you have questions on your project. Copyright laws for things like this picture are pretty straightforward, internationally standardized, and need no lawyering skills to accomplish.

So anyway, going back to the original question. If I turn up with a camera or two aty Stoneleigh and take lots of pictures of cars for a poster - do any of you think anyone would be bothered? I don't want to offend anyone.

I would then upload the final image here so that people could take a look, and if there was sufficient interest then we could get a batch printed up.
