Kia Elan

Postby rudedog » Sun 25.04.2004, 15:35

This is a picture of my 98' kia elan. From this view the difference is clear. Rear wing cutline is a Elan SE or a S2 while the front end is like a US spec. But in overall, I think it is based on the last Elan, the S2. Mine is not equiped with an airbag, but it comes as an optional extra. I think this is the reason for the longer front end like a US Elan. Kia Elans came in Red, Yellow, White, Metalic Green and Black
Image

It is powered by a Kia TSD engine. 1.8L 16v. There are many rumors about this engine on which engine it is based on. I read many articles saying that it is from Mazda, but it isn't. Old Kia cars used Mazda engine which was better in terms of modifying it. The TSD engine was built by Kia. But since Lotus was helping Kia build cars back then, rumurs that Lotus participated in the development process of it is quite convincing.
However, TSD is a very difficult engine to modify. I have never seen anyone who had sucessfully enhanced its performance without turbochrging it.

Kia Elans don't come with S2 wheels. I bought them after market with the center cap.

I have a couple of shots of a yellow one I see in Norway.

And I get Sy's point, lotus wheel centres don't belong...

..on a Kia? :o

:D Funny that you mentioned it, i ´ve already contact to those brainstorming with the VX...

In the case of the vx I think you are right. Though he got a separate Lotusnumber (Type 116) an he shares not only technical parts but rather the idea of a lightweight sportscar, IMO the character is strong enough for a own badge :)

The Elan or more the Roadster  yes, on his engine stands kia, not lotus, but how is it on the original? How is it on every Lotus since decades? (Beside the fact, that lotus should be involved by delevoping the engine...)

I have demounted one headlight two weeks ago. If I stand in the middle of all parts an the light comes free, what do you think, stood on the hood?

Yes, my dear, "Lotus" and the productiondate from 94  In my very very personal view, the kia is more lotus Image then the real type 116  and so much lotus like others, wenn I got ready with a lighter battery, perhaps wheels, ...

I'll bet that tractor makes quick work of those switchbacks!
Hey, does this mean our Kia friends will help us source those elusive Kia lights?! :poke:

DON shout out what you feel ..
it make for a good read and gives us more understanding of the lotus evolution..
by this i mean LOTUS make a good car (elan ,7) then loose it .. and is picked up by somone else and the "club" inherits a new ,different lotus enthusiast.
so by rights then your car is an N/A S2 if it has 94 on it ? !!!

clemo

YES! a N/A S2

BTW: which engine-concept could more fit to a mighty sportscar than a N/A :D Image or does you have no curves on your isle

OK, last thoughts to my long speech above, I think: We are all united in several things:

We love all beautiful cars Image

We know that the Elan is not only erotic, we know that the Elan is quick as good looking :D

We want to preserve our beauties in the garage as long as our purses are fat enough, and even further on...

Its better for all, that we have many as possible suppliers which produce stock and tuningparts as we need them for the point before

AMEN Image

and that black 8) N/A are the fastes, best looking, have the best good looking, coolest driver under the sun.... Image
