Uk road Tax ... What do you do ?

I have decided to go monthly DD and probably cancel at the end of October and put away for the winter.

I used to put it away for the winter but found that even with the best intentions it didn't get started enough, (and just starting it isn't enough anyway IMHO).
If it's a nice day then it's there for me to use, and even then I still don't get it out enough

I do a monthly DD for all 3 cars which I pay for.....

..... Elan is now SORN'd as the weather has turned crap, so it's cossetted in the nice warm garage. (but it's good to go if /when we get good weather - simply online to tax it, and off we drive....)

Occasionally we get a half decent day in the winter, so I like to keep it ready to use. I also think of it as a useful spare if my daily should have a problem.
Cold weather makes the intercooler work slightly but noticeably better too.

Pay for the whole year - because it is cheaper. Then SORN and get the remaining full months refunded. How much do I save? A tenner?

I'm a big fan of the monthly D/D scheme. It's very easy to do and I tax both my M100's this way.

At the moment I've just had my 2nd hip replaced so I have SORN'd both cars for the next 6 weeks or so, saving over £40 a month. Come the time I want to tax one, or both cars, I just go on line and put in the details from my V5 and you're immediately ready to go. Official notification comes from the DVLA via an e mail or text.

The only thing you need to consider prior to SORN'ing is to cancel your D/D mandate with your bank before the DVLA take off the next payment. And then SORN your car on the actual day you want to stop using it. There is no way you can SORN your car on, say, 25 October and then think you can continue to use it until 31 October ( unless you have the V11 reminder which you won't unless you are doing it the 6/12 month way)

For my white van I tax it for the whole year and if I need to SORN it do it the same way as Simon does

That's a smart move, especially if you're planning to put the car away for the winter.
