Interesting... Unleaded Fuel Only warning light

Postby Kathryn » Wed 21.07.2021, 20:44

A friend has an early S2, number 009, the Palacio press car. The other day the words ‘Unleaded Fuel Only’ appeared illuminated beneath the fuel gauge. She’d not seen it before and it’s not something I’ve ever seen or heard of and a quick search of the forum brings up nothing.
Has anyone else seen this before? I wonder if it is because it was a press car or perhaps a feature of the Calibra dash not used on the M100. Or maybe everyone has one except me!

I was going to say "Don't be silly…" and then I saw this in the advert for #179!

I've just checked my spare SE cluster and there isn't one. I guess it was a GM thing as cars post 1992 needed a cat (so couldn't use leaded fuel) and leaded wasn't banned until 1999.

You mean a Bugatti thing?

No, I did mean a GM thing as the supplier presumably made more than 800 for Vauxhall Ashtrays.

Knowing what Lotus were like, it was probably batches of the cheapest ones they could find. It'll be funny watching Daves walking around Castle Combe next year asking if people have less than a gallon of fuel.

Personally, I never run the car until the warning light comes on as I don't want to run the risk of any possible contamination to the fuel pump.

I particularly wouldn't want to do this with an S2 as you run the risk of damaging the catalytic convertor if the tank runs very low or empty. That photo Geoff has added shows the reserve tank running very low, probably only 15 miles left. Not a good advert for resale :?

FED versions have it too, so the hypothesis that it is tied to the catalytic converter makes sense. At least on mine, it is printed so it is always visible, and it lights up with the rest of the instrument panel too.

At one point the unleaded fuel only fuel gauges were on the aftersales list. I think it was a Far-East requirement or perhaps US. Europe made do with a sticker by the fuel cap and a narrower filler neck.

Definitely a federal requirement, all mine, including my three spare instrument clusters, have the 'unleaded fuel only' script on them. I'm just confused as the OP said that it lit up for the first time, but its a script so i am assuming she meant the low fuel light came on , not the unleaded fuel only script illuminated?

The ‘unleaded fuel only’ script lit up. The owner said she’d never noticed it before, and in typical Lotus fashion, there was plenty of fuel in the tank! I was curious as it’s not something I’ve seen before (or Geoff it would seem!)

Apologies for the gender error :-D since corrected! Now you have me curious enough to go down and take my new ones out of the box to see if there is a bulb behind the script or if its bleed over from another bulb :?

For some reason I think it should illuminate when the ignition is switched on and go out after a short delay - I've seen this somewhere, but I can't think when.

Lotus are notorious for using up what is to hand, or it could have been destined for an overseas market or show.
Does it also have the U channel rear top links rather than round, and is the non-return valve for the wasers in the boot or on the bonnet? Is there any sign of a cover over the positive post in the engine bay?
