Time to move on

Everyone knows I have been struggling with health issues for a while.

I am afraid I have reached the point where I need to spend more time getting things over here under control.

I have asked to be dropped from the forum so I don't get tempted to butt in and (god forbid) make suggestions I know to be correct and proper.

I will be closing my web sites but can still be reached.

It has been an honor to have been able to help many of you maintain your cars and I hope you continue to enjoy your projects.

Sorry to hear that you are leaving LEC John, but your health and well-being is far more important. You will be missed and i am sure there are many other members on here that like myself you have helped and assisted, even taking the time to phone from the US to the UK to give advice and organise sending parts over here to keep our Elans on the road.

I can only echo what others have said most eloquently. Thank you for all the parts, pointers and wise counsel over the last five years, on the forum and by email and telephone. One of the great benefits of the internet is that it enables those we have never met - and are never likely to - to touch our lives in ways we could not have imagined.

I hope that we on the Forum will be able to enjoy the benefits of your experience again at some stage in the future, but in the meantime, Pauline and I send all our good wishes, and hope that you’ll be able to enjoy the coming months and years without worrying about other people’s cars or parts for them.

As you're closing your web sites perhaps we should look at another way of hosting the Manuals and Elanscan software - one for the Mods I think.....

Unfortunately, John closed his website (or at least, the side of it which hosted many useful documents, but left his shop up and running for now) before he made the anouncement that he wished to leave this forum.

"We" are unsure exactly what prompted this behaviour, but know of various contributing factors.

At this stage, it is unclear whether John wishes to remain as part of this community, as he has made no direct contact with any members of the Admin/Moderation team before making this post and removing the links to his pages.

Either way, there was nothing on Johns' website which isn't already hosted elsewhere, although it was quite often seen as the definative place to find things.

Much of the content was taken from the WikiLec pages, and the manuals which he hosted were *some* of the selection which LEC already hold.

The biggest issue for LEC openly hosting such documents has always been the consideration that Lotus own the copywrite to the manuals - and we don't want to be seen as breaching that situation.

Obviously, the fact that John chose to do so is a matter between himself and Lotus - what he chose to publish as a private individual is nothing to do with LEC as a community.

Either way, and having been in contact with Lotus, we have a situation whereby LEC will NOT be hosting any 'official' copywrited (copy written??) publications at this stage, but a non-LEC website will be hosting them on the understanding that they will not be distributed for profit, reproduced, changed blah blah blah........

At this point, I am in the process of uploading a selection of stuff to a public server so that there can be an online presence of ALL useful manuals, parts books and Lotus publications - but I see no point in merely duplicating the WikiLec entries just to make it appear that I have a lot of useful stuff.... likewise, I will not be duplicating stuff which is elsewhere on the forum.

That said, I may well be adding stuff which I am the author of, as it is my stuff!

As you may imagine, this isn't always a quick and simple thing to do, but I hope to have something up and running shortly.

Had we been given an opportunity to simply copy the content to another server, this could have been avoided, but we had no influence or control over the decisions made by a member.

Following on from my post above, I am now able to say that there is some hosting for the relevant publications, which is designed to be simple and work on both Monitor & Mobile platforms......

I will be looking to add a suitable link from somewhere central, in due course........

...... but in the meantime, everything you need can be found either on the Wiki, somewhere of the forum, or HERE.

After speaking to John the other day, His health issues are part of the problem, another issue by my thoughts has been on going for a year or 2, where even 1 of the moderators tried to ruin his reputation. In my 20 year membership of the LEC, I have never seen anyone contribute so much to the forum as John has. I think that it was Simon P's remark that finally threw him to stop his support for the LEC. (the guy that probably jokingly threatened to sue him). I Have a lot of respect for BCN and what he has done for the forum. A few people decided that he was making and selling parts at possibly a profit, they wanted to get him barred from the forum. Maybe he made some profit, but he put his own money into making something that no one else would do. I've done the same. I've invested money in projects that I wanted for my car as they had not been available for years. I think that due to the stupidity of a few members they have now lost their greatest asset. Mods are probably going to delete this post, so hope you get to read it before it goes.
