In the 8 years I've had Smaug, my dear wife has not driven him once. That said, she loves our son's 1996 BMW Z3 1.9. The two cars couldn't be more different. While the Elan is a solid and reliable as a Lotus seems to get, it still doesn't have quite the same carved-from-billet feel the Z3 has; of course, the Z3 also had nearly $2K in suspension bushing refubisment. (Funny how we'll spend money on our children before ourselves.) Our Elan has more rattles (not many, but more) and "character". The Z3 is more, erm, dull. But if she drives a Lexus, the transition may be a bit much. If you were in San Diego, I'd offer to have you both over to sample them back-to-back but unless you need a vacation, that may be difficult.
That said, I'll take the headlong rush of the Elan's acceleration over the Z3 any day. And the turned heads. And the kids on the sidewalk invariably saying "wow, look at that". And never seeing myself coming the other way. You get the idea. Go for the Elan!
