How Wide ?

Postby Steve A » Sun 30.09.2007, 16:44

Hello, I'm in the process of finding a suitable Elan, I want to know how wide (tip of mirror to tip of mirror) the car is , so I can prepare my garage in advance, (I've got all kinds of stuff cluttering it up).
I've looked at various web site's and come up with a 68.3 inches, can you confirm this?
Cheers :D

Steve, 68.3" is without mirrors. If you want to keep your mirrors, you'd better make it 74.3".

Reverse it in. You get a much more accurate view backwards cuz you are looking along the side of the car, not across it.

I agree.

I have carpet screwed on the nearside wall to save the wheelarch from being scratched (again  ).
I also have some pipe insulation on the offside wall were the drivers door opens.
Also put a marker on the nearside, near the mirror so you know when to stop.
Its suprising how accurately and quickly you can do it with practice.

Are you guys parking your cars in a closet, or in your garage? Maybe it's an American thing, but I've never heard of a garage that narrow. Standard single car garage doors are 9 feet wide. That's 108", and that's just the door opening. Wall to wall inside the garage would be at least 14 feet. My garage is a double, and the door is 18 feet wide, with the inside wall-to-wall being 24 feet. Somebody needs to have a talk with your architects. 8)

I don't think British architects expect people to put cars in their garage. Unfortunately, British insurance companies do. :(

I drive mine in on the lhs of a double width garage (2 single doors) so I can get out without opening car door against wall (this assumes I dont scrape the rhs rear wheel arch on the door frame  ). This makes reversing out easy providing I remember to open the correct garage door

Mrs parks hers on other side of garage and opens door against freezer/tumble dryer/kids bikes and all the other things garages are made for

It's the 'planners' who are driving it. Cram the masses in as small a space as possible.

You have to crash it into the back wall to be able to shut the door?

Worked in housebuilding all my life. Smaller garages equals more houses equals more profit

Red Ken now pushing car free development zones equals even more profit :D

Dave Eds,

Can you quash the rumours you hit the garden fence on the way into the garage...
