Islands not in the name. I'm asking for what YOU THINK, not the technical facts; for in a larger context EVERY land mass is surrounded by water. Same question for Ireland.

For me, yes. I live on one island, "Britain", the biggest of the British Isles (so there's the island reference) BUT most of the time I'm not too bothered about what's going on across the sea and prefer to keep it there!

Jingoistic joking aside, I probably do think of Britain as an island but don't really think about it because here I'm never at risk of inadvertently walking across a heavily defended border like on a continent.

Or something like that. A strange enough answer for your strange question?! :bonk:

I like this view. Hey, what is that in the upper right corner? OH, that's right, it's my blue officer's decal.

Hey man, I worked h-a-r-d for that! Saw one of my guys take 3 shattering both femurs and that enemy soldier exsanguinate by my hand, full auto to the abdomen; seven seconds of life left. You've no idea how much blood clothes can absorb, so fast; how the color spreads like a flood, until you've seen it from two feet away. Moving images blur & haze, but frozen images remain sharp like pictures. My youngest soldier was yelling "SHOOT HIM, SHOOT HIM," forcibly holding down the AK with the barrel of his M16. And that's plenty remembered.

BTW, although you remember NOT reinlisting, for four years you are "Individual Ready Reserve," subject to recall at any time... a fact recruiters fail to mention. The mob movie said it best, "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." Lots of us were reactivated for Desert Storm. That's also the way they kept soldiers in Iraq beyond their enlistment. It's like indentured servitude. The saying, "He who would go to sea by choice would go to Hell for recreation," could be modified for all enlistees.

I have thus failed to mention I purchased an unlimited # of lookups on CARFAX to research 1981 Triumph TR8 production VIN numbers when I was searching for one. I knew prior to purchase that the TR8 I now own is the second lowest mileage TR8 on the planet! See attachment I compiled. The lowest mileage is a 5k miles carnelian red Tr8, although that mileage was recorded in California in 2005 & the car is now located in Washington state... so I can't say for sure that mine at 15.5k is NOT the lowest.

For simplicity, the attachment was my shopping list. Only the lowest mileage 1981 TR8s in the world are in this list. I only had 394 cars to look up! I choose to believe what I did is called research.

Currently the main drawback of making the 'Eight' my daily driver is that I only get 22mpg/city & 25hwy. But that's on regular gas which makes up for it some. I need to pre-order the GM alternator upgrade as I know that whilst the Lucas unit works its best now, it will turn on me with no warning!

There is both comfort in having tread this path before AND trepidation knowing how much work I have in front of me.

Having sat in the driver's seat of an 'Eight' for eight years, it is like putting on a favorite pair of old shoes each time I sit down. It's like I said in my other thread, 'Defy time in a car.' The feel of the shifter going through the gears, the weight of the clutch; even all the sounds are familiar. If only I could make myself 26 again, the picture would complete itself. :burnout:

I very recently installed Kirk Racing TR8 headers, which both increase the mileage by about 4mpg AND give the Rover V-8 that rumblin', stumblin', bumblin' basso profundo. Thus I was tootling along, saw an opening in traffic, and opened it up. Bam! Ever trust the GD Jacksonville police, with the highest per capita ratio to citizens of ANY major city in the USA (for instance, Atlanta with 5 million people has 1000 cops, Jville with 1 million people has 3000 cops!!!!!!!!!!!!!.... yah )

Got pulled over. Thankfully the wisdom of my years set me free. Several months prior I set about both to leave my windows open in the summer AND harmlessly extricate myself from incidents such as this. Simply, I posted this bumper sticker above my official, uniquely numbered & issued US-officer's base (entry) decal...

Also, instead of "petrol head" (isn't that the English way?) it's "gear head" for an automotive nut.

Four Webers! That must have been Hell to tune. My first car was a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner with a 440 and a six-pack (three two-barrels) which got 6MPG that made me sell it for a 1971 Toyota Corola coupe, then a 1974 Mazda RX-4 coupe (very fun), and the list continues.

I took this car to a welding shop today in a bad area of town. At a stoplight someone threathening came to my window "asking" for money. It is one of only three times in my 49 years of life I've pointed a gun at a civilian. "Is that supposed to scare me," was his reply. "I've never been shot point-blank in the face, so I don't know," was mine.

As someone that has killed in combat, please listen. Yes, protect your life and person and family, but if they want your wallet, gas or car, let them have it. In the end, one gets over losing those things. But if you kill or permanently maim your attacker over an object your life will be destroyed far more than you can imagine. It isn't worth it. Sure, I have been visited at night by the zombie I killed on the Iraqi shore 21 years ago. If you kill other than to save the life of someone dear to you, it will be the criminal who wins, even though lethal force protecting property has been legal in Florida since 2006 & in Georgia since 2007.

That said, if someone kills or seriously harms my daughter, I am not saying I will do the same to them... but they will not be walking the earth for long. I know how my mind works, how some things bother me, stick with me, and don't go away. Certain people are worth ending your life or going to jail for. I once spent two days in a real jail, locked up with true criminals including murderers, so I'm not mentioning something I know nothing about. Some people are there for breaking their parole on a minor technicality, or simply waiting to be bonded out. It doesn't matter. They group everyone together and treat everyone like scum. What a mistake! They create loathing for authority from people who had none before.

Just a word of caution. Don't make someone who's family was a 19th century Husker or Sooner fall back on their roots. It won't end well for the other party. This is something I have learned only through experience. They make the best soldiers, Alabamian's (the rural hunters from Alabama, those who venture with their rifle in the woods) being a close second, having an innate sense of how to kill pigs, chickens, rabbits (a taste betwixt chicken & pork). Trust me, rabbits raised on a farm are WONDERFUL EATING, quite different from those shot in the woods.

In 2008/9 an Iraqi veteran I met at a shooting range told me his job didn't hit home until some Iraqi kids around six or seven years old were playing with a boot and found that the foot was still inside. Instead of leaving it alone (as any normal person would do) they took over an hour trying to get the foot out. That is when he started to question what he was doing there.

How can I expect in hours to explain what took years to understand? I don't. In fact, if you've not been in combat you NEVER truly will. Your nearest experience in the UK, from Goose Green to the central highlands we studied in Army War College... your heritage means nil to you today. Only because those who died have no direct meaning to you. They're not real. You never met them.

With the announcement earlier this year that TVR is permanently defunct, the ancient knowledge of Triumph’s (UK) demise in 1981, and remembering my military mentor who was killed in the line of duty at age 29 (Master Chief Stephens, the dumbest mechanic you’ll ever meet) who happily accepted "glass" (rusty metal flakes) in his eyes assisting me work on my first TR8, I couldn’t be happier hearing the unique rumble of my overhead valve V-8 (NOT overhead cam… there’s a HUGE difference in sound!!!!!) explode the air around me tonight.

TR8. It’s not just a car. It’s a time machine.

And I really appreciate you doing that Jack. You've been a first rate friend all these years, above & beyond the norm, exceptionally so. It's like you have the ability in your private life not to be an attorney at all!
