Any "unused" element of the tax is however still refundable

I took that as given!! I think there might have been a bloody revolution if not!

DVLA will automatically stop taking Direct Debit payments from your bank once you declare the vehicle off-road (SORN).
Dico will be fine then.

But the huge advantage is being able to pay by monthly direct debit.

And secondarily, once a car is declared SORN, it doesn't have to be renewed each year. (Dico will benefit hugely from this one).

I wonder how many people won't bother claiming it back and good old Customs and Excise will be quids in.
Just another way of squeezing a few more quid out of the already victimised motorist by the back door .

I think you're correct but I suppose if people can't be bothered then it's their own fault.

I can see the first few months (year?) of the new arrangements being very confused for some motorists.

At the start I would anticipate some people still advertising their cars for sale with "x months tax still left". The biggest concern though are the people buying a car and not realising that they have to tax it immediately, themselves!!

Of course, if you claim a refund you can't claim the remainder of the month in which you sell the vehicle and the buyer will need to pay from the beginning of the month so 'win win' for dvla. They gain a months tax for every transaction. Not an inconsiderable sum over the total transactions within the uk. Or have I missed something?
