Recently returned from our annual trip to Texas visiting family.
'Merlot' has been tucked away covered up.
Beautiful sunny crisp day, what else to do but uncover her, put the hood down and go for a drive.

I wondered when you'd notice..

Also seen "le rôti de bœuf" used as a noun on restaurant menus and "rosbif" used as an adjective with 'salade' on a cafe's blackboard. Need Giniw to give us the proper French interpretation of what and when... :poke:

I always thought we were "RosBifs" rather than RosBouefs anyway ? Maybe that's what BabelFish spouted out for the sangria king

Depends where you are I suppose ? Cap d'Agde or Tytherington

Indeed the French "rosbif" has been borrowed directly from your "roast beef", but I suspect your "roast beef" has been borrowed directly from our "rôti de bœuf" when Guillaume le Conquérant went on vacation — actually in modern French when you have a circumflex accent it's often a trace of an S which has disappeared (like in forêt/forestier, which is obviously close to your English "forest", same in the French hôpital/hospitalier and your English hospital, etc. — as for the rôti I can't think of an adjective which still has its S, maybe "une rouste" has the same root, I don't know?)

It's funny that word crossed the pond two times. I think you should take it back again and make a new word with it :-D

As for the usage, "rôti de boeuf" is probably better, more French phonetically, and probably preferred when written, and it only refers to the meat piece.
Rosbif both refers to the dish and also the English people (used in a similar way as when you refer to us as frogs ^^ — not very polite but nothing seriously offensive)

Merci pour la clarification.

My first school teacher for French told us that after Guillaume le Conquérant and his pals took over the locals looked after animals in the fields as oxen, sheep and pig but it was only nobility, mainly French, that ate them and they used French names when on the plate, which then became anglicised over time. She said just think of what we call the meat and you'll remember the French word for the animal: oxen is eaten as beef so le bouef, sheep is mutton so le mouton, pig is pork so le porc.

Roast Beef (with Yorkshire Pudding) became a traditional British Sunday Lunch several centuries later... but not for vegetarians

Well yes I've been told the same, but the other way round! ^^
(So as a result it's OK if a French comes to England to run a restaurant, but he's out of luck if he wants to run a farm unfortunately! :-D )

Just read a car advert -

'Starts and drives
Engine part blew hole in engine but still starts and drives.
Now no Oil, all has dripped out.
Low mileage. All service History.

Very clean car. Engine and Gearbox all very good.

£3-5k when up and running.'

What ?!

'Starts and drives' - suspect.
'Hole to engine but still drives' - ermm OK.
'No oil' - believe that.
'Engine and gearbox all very good' - What ?!

God I love life !! Lunatics !!
