All that I've ever heard about Gerald is good....but both times I've tried to get my cars seen to by him he's basically turned me away, pretty openly saying he's not looking for any new business. May just be me of course....

in my books that is very positive.
i rather get a honest "i'm too busy to help you" then "bring your car and will see what we can do" and end up with my car in their premises for 2 weeks until they have the time.
a timing belt replacement in a morning is working very efficiently. i could only manage that if the car had zero issues with rusty fasteners, a cooperative pulley bolt and had my "specialist engine mount allen end" ready to go.
obviously if he did the same job 5 years ago and "forgot" to install the cover bolt that forces you to remove the engine mount. then i see that being a lot more manageable.

So, if you did "forget" to refit the cover bolt hidden behind the engine mount, would it cause any issues?
Just curious as i have my first belt change coming up.

I've never seen any mentions here or on facebook stating any issues with that.
Personally I re-installed it both times i did the timing belt. i mean. if i'm doing it only every 5/6 years, i dont mind the extra work. and it just gives me that "peace of mind"/"bragging right" that the cover is 100% complete.
knowing Pinky i suspect he doesnt have he's. (as a pragmatic type he is) you probably will find the more OCD type owners will go to the extra effort like I Did.
I personally find the alternator tension bolt to be the worst part of the whole job. and honestly if i just manned up and took the PAS reservoir as soon as i open the bonnet i would get the job done a lot faster.

That's where you're wrong!
On my first Elan I didn't bother replacing it (because the belt cover was broken so it did nowt), but on both of my current ones the bolt is correctly fitted, as I found a way to remove and replace it quite easily, and more importantly, it isn't the actual bolt which causes an issue anyway, it is the plastic moulding of the cover that the bolt runs through. It prevents the cover from sliding out easily - but removal of the PAS pipe from the reservoir to the pump (at the pump end) allows it to be moved enough to make the job simple...... and it all helps to tension the alternator belt easily, with it out of the way.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?
