Fan testing?

Postby Benmac » Mon 05.02.2007, 12:14

On my list of things I'm going to do to my car over the cominbg months is a coolant change. The stuff in there at present looks fine enough and the car behaves perfectly as far as temp goes but I'll be happier when I've done it as I don't know when it was done last and on the Elan it looks easy enough to do (its a pain on the Elise).

One thing that got me thinking though was the fans. Is there anyway I can test their function other than getting the car properly hot which obviously I'd like to avoid doing. On the Elise you can unplug one of the temp sensors and they come on automatically as a precaution. Is the Elan the same?

Ben,

u need to ground the thermal fan switch to test them, it`s on the thermostat housing. look at the manual for location. U can also test the electric water pump in the same way but with the ignition off.

The fans should kick in at 3/4 on the gauge

Ben you are worrying unnessesarily Elans are designed to run up to that temp. It is also better to test full operating temp.in the garage and any weakness show up if it is going to, than sat in a traffic jam

when changing the coolant, consider that Elan thermostats have a way of going bad and it is the perfect time to put in a new one if yours is still original :D

:agree: :goodposting:

To be honest I think it pays to replace the thermostat as part of the annual service - it's cheap and easy - and they seem prone to fail (shut or open) on the M100 Elan

Just my two pennorth.

The easiest thing is to get the one for the 90-92 Isuzu Impulse Turbo. It's the same one, for the same engine. I've got one in my Elan and it works perfectly. Every parts store will have it in stock.
