So, I worked out the easiest way for
me. I think that in my case it was actually the only way!
1. Both halves of the engine mounting out of the car.
2. Put the beam (engine side) down next to the timing belt cover below the PAS fluid tube with the rear-mounting part as close to the mounting holes as you can without dropping it.
3. Put the hanger bracket (body side) in on the mounting point, slightly engine-wards; do not bolt it in
4. Screw in the top bolt fixing the bracket and the beam together
5. Tricky part: lift the assembly as much as you can and screw in the middle bolt - for this you probably need to put the front-pointing part of the beam between the PAS pulley and the timing belt cover; colourful language may help!
6. Wiggle the assembled mounting down into place
7. Get underneath the car and prepare to continue swearing as you try and get the rest of the bolts into place and try and variety of tools and makeshift pieces to screw them all in and tight
8. Realise you don't have a suitable torque wrench to get on all these bolts and just decide to tighten all the bolts until just before the point you turn purple (if lying down; if you have the car up on a lift then you probably don't need to try so hard).
Voila!
Now, what is the torque setting for the bolt which fixes the hanger bracket to the body mounted round bracket? I couldn't find it in the service manual.
