Boost gauge sender does it fail?

The evidence is my boost gauge sender unit has failed. It is not is an earth problem (earths tested by jumper lead back to battery) and sender earths fully cleaned as per wiki.Boost_gauge_problem wiki

The gauge itself shows full deflection to 1 bar plus when the ignition is switched on. If the green and black (earth) wire at the sender is connected together then the gauge reads 0 bar as it should, if ignition is turned off the needle falls slightly to its full stop. The gauge itself is fine and wired correctly also as per wiki.
A multimeter shows 7.2v between the green sender wire and black sender earth.
There is no circuit across the sender unit even when vacuum is applied, i.e resistance infinite ohms, akin to a blown bulb.

Everything was fine until the clam shell was taken off for painting so lots of wiring was disturbed. A replacement sender has been fitted but no different. Does anybody know what the resistance across the sender unit and voltage across it should be? If it is a duff sender any ideas where a new one/alternative can be sourced?
(The sender unit is also known as the boost pressure transducer, made by VDO part A082M6365F, or more commonly the can thingy with a red rubber boot secured by a round spring, drivers side engine bulkhead).

If you remove the power and ground wires to the transducer the boost gauge will peg full boost which would indicate, given the clam was removed, that the power wire has been cut or pinched somewhere. Try checking for continuity between the transducer + and the boost gauge which is fed by the same + as the other gauges which indicates its between the boost gauge and the transducer.

Does anybody now where a replacement boost gauge sender can be sourced? mine has definitely failed , it should should be showing resistance of 15 ohms that rises to 183 ohms on full boost (sender range 0 to 1.5bar). My sender shows infinite resistance so akin to a blown fuse. The part is listed as A 082M6365F, but they now seem unavailable. I have been spoken at length to what used to be VDO who manufactured them but also unable to help. Has anybody used an alternative part number?

Hi Gav,

I don't have an alternative for the sender, however I have fitted my car with a mechanical boost/vac gauge from VDO. The face does not match, but I mocked up a new face and printed on paper, then put it in the gauge. It's ugly when backlit but it takes a practiced eye to know it's not stock during daylight hours. See this thread, and PM me if you'd like me to send a PDF of the gauge face for printing, or maybe just print one for you and snail mail it.
