Is the light on the extreme left side ("Low Screen Wash tell tale) or mostly to the right (Brakes tell tale)?

Yes, but to do a proper job...
1. set base timing
2. Set tickover
3. reset ecu

Back to your original question backfiring on the overrun is a lean mixture, you may just have to live with it in order to pass the MOT.

Poor fuel economy is usually due to a heavy right door ;) - Or as BCN says rich mixture and backfiring can be caused by CTS Coolant Temperature Sensor - Check with elanscan

No humour, or at least an attempt at humour, clearly wasted - See first post.

I have come across this very old thread which applies to my car. Popping on the overrun.

I think it has a replacement exhaust which may be the cause.

I would be grateful for advice taking into account two facts. First the MOT man says the emissions are exceptionally good. Secondly, the popping is worse in reverse.

Are these facsts significant please?

Thanks

just out of curiosity.

if the poping worse if you try to start from second instead of 1st gear ?

the reverse torque multiplyer is not equivalent to 1st but in the opposite direction. its actually somewhere between 1st and 2nd gear which demands differnet strain on the engine..

i may be leading nowhere with it. but its something that may be relevant ?

Thank you. I do not know but will test tomorrow. I do not usually pull away in 2nd but will report back.

No popping pulling away in second.

Seems to be confined to overrun and reverse. It even stalls in reverse. At least my dog knows I have arrived home.

Problems due to engine torque - loose ground, wires pulled, hoses loose or cracked??
