Cambelt change and water pump

My cam belt needs doing in April so I'm starting to read up on the ins and outs on the various threads here.

The car has done 106k miles and last had it done at 82k which in April will be five years ago hence the requirement.

Now, in the history file I have there is no mention of the waterpump ever being changed on the two occasions the belt has been done. Would I be right in thinking that despite the additional cost it would be sensible to swap the pump at the same time?

I notice from the other threads that bits can be had cheaply from Rock Autos in the states. Is the saving worth it in erms of delivery reliability, parts quality and accuracy over buying more expensivey from the usual suspects here. I presume I'd need the belt, the pump and the pulleys.

change the water pump...its cheap enough
get the stuff from rock autos.....cost me £160 for everything (incl postage...which took 3 days to get to me and no customs bill either)....
belt, idler bits, pump, gaskets everything.....
theyre about £50 an item from the lotus dealers.....well it all came to about £250~£260 if Id have bought here
and you should ask to see if anyone has the current discount code....another 5% off ))))

I found the core charges a bit steep. I got invoiced by Fedex too. It still worked out loads cheaper than buying from a UK supplier though.

I have also been told by a very reputable source that most of these US alternatives look better quality than the Lotus originals.

I found someone who imports isuzu parts. I want to check if he can get me the parts but he wants to see the parts. That isn't possible so part number would be a good start I thought... I will take the gates and acdelco numbers with me then.

When I change a cambelt, I mark the belt to each pulley with a paint pen and then transfer the markings onto the new belt from the old, remembering that they have to be on the same side of the belt.
Then I just matchup the marks and voila... no timing, referencing etc. needed.
If you are worried about the valves touching the pistons, just turn the motor until the pistons are half way down.

I have completed my parts collection for doing my cambelt. The final item i needed was a water pump, and after paying the eye watering Lotus main dealer prices for the belt and pulleys, i thought i would break my own unwritten rule and fit a `pattern` water pump, based mainly on the fact that RockAuto sell a Beck Arnley item for $25! (old stock). Even with the $80 carriage, this is about 1/3 of the Lotus price and as it turned out, quicker to supply as well - three days. (After all, it`s only coming from Texas, not Norfolk!)

I would like to keep my business with Lotus Cars, and will do where possible, but this is just ridiculous. In summary, RockAuto are the business. Oh, and thanks for the part number chaps.

Well, Oliver -

You'll be pleased to know that you haven't bought a Pattern part at all - the Rockauto ones are Isuzu OE, therefore also Lotus OE, the only difference is in the packaging (and price tag!).

That's one of the reasons we all bought 'em
