Water pump

Postby E18N SE » Fri 25.05.2007, 18:38

I have had a water leak coming from what can only be the water pump. The reason why I say this is because its coming from behind the belt casing, I took it to a garage and they confimed that I will need to change the water pump!!!

Being a bit of a tight git (must be the 1/4 scottish in me) I thought why not try some Rad Leak. Heypresto after 1 minute the leak had gone completley, even after a long thrashing.

My question is, am i putting off the inevitable and could this even make things worse??? How much does a new water pump cost and how easy/difficult are they to replace???

Cheers

YES!!!!!! The water pump is driven by the timing belt. If the water pump is leaking, has leaked, will leak again you need to replace both now. You will save yourself a major headache later. Like the timing belt either slipping or worse...breaking. Either one will cost you big in engine repairs.

Timing belts and water pumps need to be replaced between 60-80K miles and both should be replaced at te same time. Rad leak and other leak fixing product s only serve to gum up your engine. Thats how they "fix" the leak. Drain your coolant and flush the system to remove any excess Rad leak and replace with fresh coolant. Then get the water pump and timing blet replaced. You'll thank me later.

Hi

I think I also have a water pump problem that needs confirming?
I have water trickling down from behind the waterpump? only when the engine is running. I have limited experience with engines  so i'll try and explain....

The main belt has a tension idler at the front of the engine that also retains and houses the water pump? The leak is not coming from this component as you can't actually see the source of the leak. It runs down in-between the tension idler somewhere and the block and down onto the sump.

The belt is dry as a bone... here is a photo

red is possible location of leak blue is what I think is the water pump?

Thats not a water pump, its a PAS pump. The water pump is hidden inside the cambelt cover lower down. Were the red dot is thats just a bolt and that holds the bracket so there should be no fluid there. Are you sure it`s coolant that u`r loosing? :?

A couple of minor points here,

1) the blue circle appears to be on the power steering pump, at the 'front' of the engine (in relation to the car).

The water pump is behind the plastic cam belt cover, and hidden from view without removing lots of bits first!

Okay, now to try and be a bit helpful (i'm not intending to be critical or insulting with the above comments), are you sure that the leak is water not power steering fluid?

Power fluid is usually (but not always) a reddish colour, and not always 'oily' to the touch. Best way to tell is to soak some of the leak up with a clean white cloth (kitchen or bog roll is ideal) and see what colour it is.

Basically, water will be blue/green/pink/clear depending on your antifreeze (check against a similar cloth dipped into the header/overflow water tank at rear left side of engine bay)

Engine oil will be black/brown/gold and 'oily' to the touch.

Brake fluid will be yellow/brown (non-oily).

Dextron III power steering fluid is red when new, but if 'burnt' goes a bit brown.

It is probably worth checking the fluid level in the resevoir (black box thing on the bulkhead, next to the plennum chamber on the right-hand end).

There is a pipe which attaches to the top of the power steering pump from the resevoir which has been known to fracture at the banjo junction, also a 'low presure' pipe at the rear/bottom of the pump which may leak a bit (in the area of your red circle).

I expect it to be a power fluid leak, but check it out and let us know what colour it is for a better idea of the problem.

Any 'leaked' fluid can be compared to the appropriate reservoir to confirm what it is.

Hi, no its definately water, I can back this up as on a trip out the other day the a/c was blowing cold air. So I pulled over and the coolant tank was bone-dry. Getting under the car it looks like its coming from where you describe the water pump to be. I can't actually see the source of the leak but its not a hose

Also the water coming out is steaming hot!

The radiator by-pass pipe is in that location.

It is a metal pipe which is bolted to the block (roughly where your red dot is) and runs behind the dip stick and then behind the turbo.

Where it bolts to the block, there is a paper gasket which may of gone, or maybe the bolts need nipping up. They are a bit of a bugger to get to though.

Check the jubilee clip on the hose aswell.

Jack up the drivers side, top up the coolant and run the engine and see if u can spot were it`s dripping. As the cambelt cover is covering the waterpump you would normally see water dripping from the bottom.

If u can get the top part of the cambelt cover of then it will be easyer to spot but it`s not that easy to remove

:goodposting: Sounds like good advice from Paul.

Water leaks have been reported from this area which are from pipe/hose and do not need a water pump replacement. Best to check the easier and cheaper option first.

Can you confirm that these part numbers are all compatible with the Elan SE? The Beck/Arnley one you bought is not available, and searching the website under the 1991 Elan SE, no water pumps at all are showing up against the car (although I can search on and find some of the other water pumps you mention via the part numbers you give). Which one would you recommend next from your list?

Mark/.

I think I can see now - you've also searched under the 1991 ISUZU IMPULSE RS 1.6L 1588cc L4 FI Turbo, which has the identical engine. I noticed that the Bosch part states OE, so I've gone for that.
