What would such a retrofit entail?
Are the parts ALL still available?
What would a good ball-park guess be as to man-hours?

Yes!
I fitted the s1 r12 aircon to an s2
It is possible but you have to take lots of things out put the A/C in and put lots of things back. Nothoing particularly difficult. Hardest part was getting the evaporator in without taking the dash out - cos I didn't feel like taking the dash out.
I did it 3 years ago and most of the bits were available.
It is going to cost £1k at least unless you can get the parts 2nd hand and then you may end up doing the job twice (I did!)
